How we approach garden terracing & retaining wall assessment

01

Identify what the wall is required to hold

A low planting-bed border and a retaining wall supporting a sloping bank are not the same structure. The more soil a wall holds, the more important drainage, foundation conditions and surcharge from vehicles, buildings or nearby paths become. We ask about the vertical height difference, existing erosion and what sits above and below the proposed structure. Some terracing can be accomplished with grading and low planting areas, while significant retention requires structural design and approvals. We will not present an attractive wall finish as proof that a structure can safely resist earth pressure.

02

Drainage behind a retaining feature

Water accumulating behind a wall adds pressure and can lead to movement or failure. The design needs to consider backfill, drainage layers, appropriate outlets and what happens during Cape Town winter storms. A drain that simply discharges onto a neighbour’s plot is not a proper solution. We also inspect whether existing irrigation, buried services or tree roots will intersect the construction. There is no universal detail that works for every bank. Where the slope, wall height or adjacent structures raise safety questions, the design and sign-off must come from the relevant qualified specialist.

03

Access, materials and site disturbance

Blockwork, masonry, modular retaining units and natural stone have different labour, footing and structural implications. A tight garden passage may limit machinery and affect material transport and spoil removal. Excavation near foundations or boundary walls must be planned carefully. We discuss protection of existing trees, temporary stability of exposed soil and how nearby paths will remain safe during work. Landscaping activities such as steps, planting and erosion-control measures should complement the retaining solution rather than hide a weak or poorly drained base.

04

Cape Town slopes and project coordination

A terraced garden can make a steep property more usable and create planting pockets that are easier to water and maintain. But complex slopes require more than a visual concept. We propose beginning with a site survey of levels, drainage paths and the intended use of each terrace. If an engineer or municipal approval is necessary, this becomes a clearly identified prerequisite to construction. The quotation should separate design, structural work, drainage, steps, planting and surface finishes. That prevents a small landscaping estimate being mistaken for a complete engineered retaining-wall proposal.

Common enquiries and what changes the job

Soil moves onto a walkway after rain

Temporary erosion measures and drainage review may be needed before permanent terracing is designed.

Existing wall has cracks and a lean

A competent structural assessment is needed; simply rendering or planting against the wall is not an adequate repair.

Owner wants level lawn on a steep plot

The retained soil volume, access and safe grading determine feasibility before lawn cost is relevant.

Information that helps define the work

Share images of the full slope, approximate height difference, existing cracks, water movement and neighbouring structures.

Explain whether the job involves a decorative low border, new garden terraces or an existing retaining structure with signs of movement.

Frequently asked questions

Garden Terracing & Retaining Wall Assessment: customer questions

Can any landscaper build a tall retaining wall?

Structural work requires appropriate design, expertise and any necessary approvals; landscaping and engineering roles must be separated.

Will planting alone stop a failing wall?

No. Planting can help manage surface erosion but does not substitute for a sound structural retaining design.

Can a retaining wall be built without drainage?

Water management is essential to the design and must be determined for the site, not omitted to reduce the quotation.
