Service assessment and practical solutions

01

Read the lawn before bringing machinery

A hard, thin lawn may have compacted soil, but it could also suffer from poor light, shallow roots, irregular watering or an unsuitable grass type. Thatch is a layer of partially decomposed stems and roots above the soil surface; it is not the same as ordinary surface clippings. We examine the lawn’s growth pattern, soil moisture and the depth of any thatch before recommending mechanical work. Aggressive treatment at the wrong time can damage weak turf, so the existing lawn condition matters more than simply booking a machine.

02

When aeration is appropriate

Aeration can create openings that support movement of air, water and nutrients into compacted soil. The treatment type depends on soil texture, access and turf condition. A small ornamental lawn may require a different approach from a heavily used communal area or play space. We look at foot traffic, signs of ponding, root depth and whether irrigation reaches the compacted zones. Aeration should form part of a recovery plan where compaction is truly limiting growth, not be sold as a universal cure for all brown lawns.

03

When dethatching helps—and when it harms

Excessive thatch can restrict water movement and hold moisture near the surface, but some organic material is normal. Dethatching removes accumulated material and can expose weak turf if performed aggressively. Timing must suit the growth season and the grass species. We consider whether follow-up feeding, top-dressing or overseeding is sensible, and whether the client can accommodate a temporary rough appearance while recovery occurs. Dead patches caused by permanent shade or poor drainage need a different solution.

04

Cape Town water and seasonal conditions

Cape Town lawns face changing rainfall, summer heat and garden water-use rules. A recovery plan should not depend on unlawful daily watering or promise immediate lush results. We consider the property’s lawful irrigation access, exposure and realistic aftercare. Tell us the lawn’s approximate size, grass type if known, where water accumulates and whether machinery can access the area. The quote should distinguish aeration, dethatching, disposal of removed material and any follow-up lawn rehabilitation work.

Common enquiries and what changes the job

Lawn feels hard underfoot

Compaction may be involved, but check soil moisture and root depth before mechanical treatment.

Thick springy surface layer

Thatch depth, turf vigour and season determine whether dethatching is appropriate.

Brown patch beneath a tree

Shade or root competition may be the dominant problem; aeration alone is unlikely to correct it.

Before booking

Information that helps define the work

Share lawn dimensions, photographs in good light, watering arrangements and whether the area has significant foot traffic.

Ask for any lawn treatment plan to include realistic recovery expectations and compliant water use.

Frequently asked questions

Lawn Aeration & Dethatching: customer questions

Are aeration and dethatching the same?

No. Aeration addresses soil compaction; dethatching removes excessive accumulated material above the soil.

Will the lawn be green immediately?

No. Some treatments temporarily expose soil or thin the surface. Recovery depends on grass health, timing and aftercare.

Can these treatments fix poor drainage?

Only when compaction is part of the problem. Persistent ponding may need a separate drainage assessment.
