Service assessment and practical solutions

01

Start with the gardener’s purpose

Raised beds can improve access, organise vegetable growing or separate planting soil from an unsuitable existing surface. A vegetable bed needs different depth and seasonal maintenance from a decorative succulent planter. We ask who will use it, how much walking space is required and whether the site sits on soil, paving or a balcony. Water supply and the direction of sunlight matter from the beginning. A handsome border that has no drainage or is difficult to reach will soon become a maintenance problem.

02

Materials, dimensions and load

Timber, masonry, modular metal and other retaining materials have different durability, appearance and installation requirements. We consider bed height, access from both sides, safety of exposed edges and whether soil pressure needs structural support. Elevated planters and rooftop beds can impose substantial wet-soil loads; structural approval may be needed before construction. The choice of liner and any protective treatment should suit the intended plants, particularly food crops. We avoid assuming that a raised bed automatically eliminates all root or pest issues.

03

Drainage and growing medium

A raised bed needs a way for excess water to leave without washing soil onto paving or damaging adjacent structures. Where a bed is placed above impermeable surfaces, outlet planning and waterproofing are critical. Soil mix should suit the plants and the expected irrigation pattern, with adequate root depth and stable structure. Filling a deep box entirely with expensive compost is rarely a sound long-term soil strategy. We discuss substrate selection, compaction, top-up needs and practical access for seasonal replacement.

04

Cape Town water-wise growing

Vegetable beds and ornamental beds have different water demands. In Cape Town, current water-use rules and the summer dry season should inform irrigation design and planting choices. Drip watering may be suitable where it can be installed and operated lawfully. We ask for a site photograph, bed dimensions, whether food plants are planned and the intended watering arrangement. The quote should identify construction, drainage, soil, planting and irrigation as separate components so changes to the budget are clear before materials are purchased.

Common enquiries and what changes the job

Vegetable bed on paving

Plan drainage and the protection of the paving before filling with soil.

Planter beside a boundary wall

Consider water movement against the wall and the bed’s own support needs.

Accessible garden for limited mobility

Height, approach width and reachable planting depth should guide the design.

Before booking

Information that helps define the work

Provide available space dimensions, surface type, desired height and whether food crops or ornamentals are intended.

If the site is a balcony or roof, arrange structural confirmation before considering heavy soil-filled construction.

Frequently asked questions

Raised Garden Bed Installation: customer questions

Can I build a raised bed directly on paving?

Often it is possible, but drainage and surface protection need planning. Elevated or suspended structures may require load assessment.

Does a raised bed need an irrigation system?

Not always. Water supply should suit planting and site access, with any irrigation following local water-use rules.

Will you include soil and plants?

The quotation should distinguish bed construction from soil filling, planting and irrigation so the client can choose the complete scope.
