Service assessment and practical solutions

01

Understand the activities and wear zones

A school practice field, informal play area and full-size competition pitch have different performance expectations. Goal mouths, touchlines and entrances often wear faster than the rest of the turf. We ask which sports use the ground, seasonal intensity and whether play must continue during maintenance. A simple weekly mowing quote will not necessarily address compaction, bare sections, dangerous depressions or a persistently wet corner. The desired surface standard should be agreed at the outset.

02

Assess irrigation, drainage and turf condition

Grass health depends on soil, water supply and the suitability of the turf species for the site. Uneven irrigation can leave soft wet patches beside dry hard zones; damaged drains create a different risk. We review accessible sprinkler heads, recent fertilising and when the area last received aeration or top dressing. Major subsurface drainage and professional playing-surface construction are separate specialist projects and should not be quietly included in an ordinary grounds maintenance contract.

03

Plan maintenance around people and weather

Work must be scheduled around classes, matches, visitor movement and school security policies. Machinery, removed branches, temporary holes and maintenance materials must be isolated from children and spectators. Wet winter fields may need a rest period to avoid damaging the surface further. We discuss how mowing height and frequency change with the season and how repairs can be phased to keep safe access. Any pesticide application or regulated chemical treatment needs appropriately qualified handling and clear notification.

04

Record condition and agree measurable work

A recurring agreement should specify mowing zones, edging, irrigation checks, waste removal and the frequency of condition reports. Photos taken from fixed viewpoints can show how worn areas respond over time, but they do not replace an assessment of ground stability or sports governing-body standards. If school facilities need formal playing-surface certification, that is a separate competence and deliverable. Our proposal would distinguish routine landscape care from reconstruction, specialist testing and major irrigation installation.

Frequently asked questions

School & Sports Field Grounds Maintenance: customer questions

Can one lawn schedule suit every sports field?

No. Turf type, use intensity and seasonal conditions should shape frequency and treatments.

Will aeration repair a waterlogged field?

Not if serious drainage defects remain; the cause of water retention needs assessment.

Can the field be used during repairs?

Some work can be phased, while other treatments require restricted access for safety and turf recovery.
