Service assessment and practical solutions

01

Electrical provision before the unit arrives

An air conditioner can require a dedicated electrical circuit, appropriate local isolation and routing that matches the unit’s installation instructions. We ask for the make, model, rated current, proposed indoor and outdoor locations and whether the project is a new installation or a replacement. A socket near the indoor unit is not proof that the circuit is appropriate for the system. Planning the supply early avoids awkward surface cabling after walls have been painted or ceilings closed.

02

Isolator position, protection and cable route

Local isolation should be identifiable and accessible for maintenance without exposing occupants or tradespeople to unnecessary hazards. The circuit, protective device and cable are selected based on the equipment and the applicable installation requirements. For an outdoor condenser, sunlight, rain and coastal air affect enclosure selection and mounting. We consider penetrations, waterproofing around the route and practical service access. Where an existing circuit is reused, its condition and capacity are checked rather than assumed from the fact that the old air conditioner once operated.

03

What the electrician does—and what the installer does

The refrigeration installer handles equipment selection, refrigerant pipework and appliance commissioning. The electrical contractor is responsible for the fixed electrical supply and its testing within the agreed scope. Some jobs are coordinated through one contractor arrangement, but that does not mean every electrical visit includes refrigerant work. We establish who supplies each component, the preferred completion sequence and which party will carry out final equipment energisation. The quotation should make these boundaries clear so nobody is waiting on an unidentified connection.

04

Troubleshooting repeated aircon supply trips

A tripping breaker could indicate an electrical circuit problem or a fault inside the appliance. We establish whether trips occur at start-up, after prolonged running or in wet weather, and whether other equipment is affected. The fixed supply and local isolator can be assessed separately from the unit’s internal controls or compressor. Unsafe bypassing of protective devices is never a remedy. For Cape Town businesses, site access, working hours and disruption to occupants should be discussed when planning shutdowns or rewiring.

Recognise the situation

Common enquiries and what changes the job

New split-unit installation

Provide the equipment electrical specifications and intended condenser position before wiring is designed.

Outdoor isolator has corroded

Weather exposure and failed seals may require more than swapping a switch like-for-like.

Aircon trips the electrical board

Electrical supply and appliance faults must be differentiated through proper testing.

Information that helps define the work

Share the unit model, installer requirements and photographs of the proposed route and current DB.

Specify whether equipment supply and refrigeration installation are arranged separately from the electrical work.

Frequently asked questions

Air Conditioner Isolators & Power Circuits: customer questions

Can any nearby wall socket power an air conditioner?

Not automatically. The unit’s specifications and the existing circuit must be checked before it is used.

Will the electrician also charge refrigerant?

Refrigeration commissioning is a different service. The quotation will state whether it is provided by a separate specialist.

Does a faulty isolator always explain tripping?

No. An appliance fault, damaged cable or protective-device issue can create similar symptoms. Testing is required.
