Decide whether automatic transfer is appropriate
An automatic transfer system is useful only where the generator, controls and supported loads are suitable for the application. We first clarify what must stay powered, the startup delay the occupants can tolerate and how the generator handles motor starting and other surges. A simple manual changeover may be a better fit for some homes; business premises with unattended equipment may require a more detailed design. Existing generator installations need their current protection and switching arrangement checked before controls are added.
