What the work involves and how we assess it

01

Keep the generator isolated from the grid

A portable or standby generator cannot safely be connected to household wiring using an improvised plug-to-plug lead. Uncontrolled back-feed can energise wiring that should be isolated and endanger occupants and utility workers. A changeover arrangement must prevent two incompatible supplies from being connected together. We first ask for generator output details, property supply type, preferred circuits and photos of external labels taken without opening electrical equipment.

02

Manual changeover versus automatic transfer

Manual changeover may suit a property where someone can start a generator and switch supplies deliberately. Automatic arrangements introduce generator start controls and transfer logic and must be selected around the equipment and intended loads. Neither design should be promised on price alone. The correct protective and earthing arrangement depends on the generator characteristics, installation design and relevant requirements.

03

Choose essential loads before altering a DB

An undersized generator cannot run everything simply because a suitable transfer switch exists. Geysers, stoves and motor starts may exceed practical capacity. We discuss circuits that matter during an outage—such as lighting, refrigeration or defined office equipment—then review supply and protection. Any distribution board changes require competent testing and proper labelling to reduce confusion during routine operation or maintenance.

04

Position, ventilation and handover

Generators produce exhaust gases and must never be operated inside a home or enclosed garage. Outdoor location, cable protection, rain exposure, noise and safe refuelling all shape an installation. We discuss commissioning tests with both sources and provide clear operating guidance within the agreed scope. Maintenance of generator engines is separate from the wiring and transfer installation unless expressly included.

Situations to discuss

Common job conditions that change the approach

Describe what you have observed before requesting work. These examples are not substitutes for an on-site diagnosis.

Generator currently powers a socket extension

Do not back-feed the house. Ask for an approved, suitably designed changeover connection.

Shop needs refrigeration during outages

Define refrigerator and compressor starting loads before specifying generator capacity or changeover.

Existing manual switch feels unreliable

Arrange inspection of isolation, interlocking and connections rather than continuing to operate damaged gear.

Preparing the request

What to have ready before arranging an assessment

Write down the generator nameplate output, whether it is portable or fixed, and which essential loads must remain available. A refrigerator, a small office and a pump all place different demands on the generator, particularly at start-up. Send a photograph of the closed distribution-board front and the generator label, but never remove covers or attempt to connect an unsafe improvised plug arrangement.

The handover should make it clear how the household safely changes supply sources, which circuits are included and what to do if the generator fails to start or an overload occurs. An automatic transfer arrangement needs a different control scope from a manual switch. Generator exhaust location and weather protection are part of the site conversation even when the quotation is primarily for electrical work.

If the existing system includes a solar inverter, battery backup or an alternative changeover, advise us before requesting generator integration. Multiple power sources add protection and interlocking questions which cannot be resolved by choosing a transfer switch in isolation. The operating procedure should remain understandable to whoever will actually use it.

Frequently asked questions

Generator Changeover Switch Installation: questions

Can I plug my generator into a wall outlet?

No. Back-feeding through an ordinary outlet is dangerous and is not a compliant method.

Can a small generator run my geyser?

It depends on load and capacity; high-demand appliances commonly need exclusion from essential circuits.

Do you connect the generator’s fuel system?

Electrical changeover work does not automatically include mechanical servicing or fuel installation.
