How we approach commercial led lighting retrofit & upgrades

01

Retrofitting is more than swapping lamps

Older fluorescent or discharge fixtures can consume significant electricity and require frequent replacement parts. But fitting an LED tube or panel without checking the existing driver, ballast and circuit may leave a dangerous or unreliable installation. We first record what is currently installed, how the space is used, normal working hours and which areas have inadequate light. A storage aisle, customer counter and computer workstation have different illumination and glare requirements. Proper retrofits should improve visibility and ease of maintenance, not simply reduce lamp wattage.

02

Choose the right fixture and controls

The selected LED equipment needs appropriate light distribution, colour appearance, glare control, ingress protection and service life for the environment. It is rarely wise to install the same fitting everywhere in a mixed-use building. Existing dimmers, emergency circuits, motion sensors and switching groups may or may not be compatible. Where fixtures are connected through old ballasts, a safe conversion method must follow the product design and electrical requirements. A lighting schedule helps facilities managers understand which fittings change, what remains and which controls may need rewiring.

03

Occupied buildings and phased installation

Stores and offices may need lighting maintained while customers or staff are present. We discuss safe isolation of one zone at a time, ladder or access-platform arrangements and disposal of removed components. High ceilings, display areas, wet workshops and exterior loading bays bring different installation challenges. Before promising savings, we need the fitting count, current loads and operating schedule; no generic percentage applies to every building. Testing after installation checks switching, controls and any affected protective devices before the area returns to service.

04

Handover that supports long-term upkeep

A good retrofit should leave the owner with an updated fixture schedule, product details, circuit labels where changed and clear instructions for controls. Some clients want presence sensors to reduce unnecessary hours; others need constant illumination for security or work. Maintenance planning should distinguish a failed LED driver from a tripped circuit or unsuitable upstream supply. For Cape Town landlords and commercial premises, a site walk-through and photographs of existing luminaires allow us to scope a phased quotation without claiming every LED conversion is a full electrical-system upgrade.

Common enquiries and what changes the job

Office lamps flicker after an LED swap

Ballast, driver or dimmer incompatibility may be involved; replacing lamps again without testing may not resolve it.

Warehouse wants lower running costs

Ceiling height and aisle geometry affect fixture choice; the number of lumens per fitting alone is not enough.

Retail store cannot close during work

A zone-by-zone isolation plan and safe customer exclusion areas may be required.

Information that helps define the work

Provide fitting counts by room, ceiling heights, approximate operating hours and photographs of representative existing luminaires.

Tell us whether emergency lighting, sensors, dimmers or tenant-specific lighting schedules must be preserved during the conversion.

Frequently asked questions

Commercial LED Lighting Retrofit & Upgrades: customer questions

Will any LED lamp work in an old fitting?

No. Existing ballast, driver, socket and wiring compatibility must be checked for the particular product.

Does a retrofit require a new distribution board?

Not routinely. We inspect the relevant circuits and protection and recommend other changes only where justified.

Can the job be done without interrupting trading?

Often work can be phased, but safe isolation and access restrictions determine which areas need temporary closure.
