LED Dimmer Switch Installation & Flicker Repairs Cape Town

Dimmer problems are often a compatibility issue rather than a defective bulb. We assess lamp drivers, dimmer ratings and circuit wiring for smoother control, particularly during upgrades from older halogen lighting.

Site assessment and work planning

01

Identify the dimming technology already installed

Traditional dimmers built for incandescent and halogen loads may not work properly with modern low-wattage LEDs. Some LEDs are not dimmable at all, while others require a particular leading-edge or trailing-edge control. We check lamp and driver specifications, number of fittings and the current dimmer model before ordering parts. A chandelier containing mixed brands or ages of lamps can behave unpredictably even when the total wattage appears within the switch rating.

02

Investigate flicker, buzzing and minimum-light problems

If lights flash at low brightness, stay faintly illuminated when off or buzz as they dim, the cause may involve control electronics, minimum load, wiring or poor-quality drivers. We consider whether the behaviour occurs on one switch, all circuits or only when another appliance starts. A dimmer replacement should not conceal a loose connection or underlying voltage issue. We inspect and test the electrical circuit before deciding whether the solution is a compatible device, lamp change or further fault finding.

03

Plan the switch location and controls

A multi-gang switch box may have limited space for electronic modules or inadequate heat dissipation. Smart dimmers sometimes need a neutral conductor and may rely on a compatible hub or wireless network. We confirm whether the owner wants simple rotary control, preset scenes or remote operation. The existing switch-plate system can affect availability of matching accessories; neat finishes are part of the quotation rather than an automatic assumption.

04

Verify performance at both ends of the range

After suitable installation, the circuit should be checked at minimum and maximum settings with all lamps operating together. We assess whether the lights switch off fully, remain stable and do not overheat the control. Where a manufacturer specifies calibration for low-end dimming, we follow that process. Customers should know that LED brightness changes are not necessarily linear and that some lamp/driver combinations cannot reach an extremely low level without visible flicker.

What influences the cost and practical work?

Frequently asked questions

LED Dimmer Switch Installation & Flicker Repairs: frequently asked questions

Can a dimmer make a non-dimmable LED work?

No. A lamp marked non-dimmable should not be connected to a dimming control unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it.

Is buzzing always dangerous?

Not necessarily, but persistent buzzing, overheating, smell or abnormal flicker warrants inspection rather than being ignored.

Can I use the existing switch wires for a smart dimmer?

Sometimes. Requirements differ by device, and some models need a neutral or other wiring changes that must be assessed by an electrician.
