Occupancy & Motion Sensor Lighting Cape Town

Motion-controlled lights are useful in passages, storerooms, entrances and exterior access routes, but the wrong sensor can trigger at the wrong time or leave an area dark. We assess coverage, control type and circuit suitability before installation.

Site assessment and work planning

01

Decide what should trigger the light

A passive infrared sensor responds to changes in detected heat, whereas other sensors use different detection methods and are suitable for different spaces. In a stairwell, the priority may be reliable detection before a person steps onto the stairs; in a storeroom, it may be keeping the light on while someone is stationary. We ask how the space is used, whether pets or vehicles move through it and whether the user requires a manual override. A sensor positioned by a hot air outlet or moving foliage can cause unwanted activation.

02

Check light fittings and driver compatibility

LED lamps and fittings may behave badly with unsuitable sensor relays, especially where a small standby current produces flicker or ghost illumination. We review the existing switching circuit, neutral availability and the load rating of the proposed device. The sensor should be suitable for the enclosure, supply voltage and connected lighting equipment. Replacing a traditional switch is not always a simple swap when the control device needs additional wiring.

03

Position outdoor sensors for reliable operation

Wind-driven branches, nearby passing traffic, rising steam and harsh weather can interfere with detection or equipment life. We assess mounting height, the sensor field of view, daylight settings and weather protection. For a driveway or gate, the lighting must provide safe visibility without shining into neighbours’ rooms. Cable routing, joints and outdoor enclosure ratings need proper attention; water ingress at a junction can cause tripping that looks like a defective sensor.

04

Commission the timing and override arrangements

The final setup should be checked in darkness or using the manufacturer’s test mode. We adjust sensitivity, delay period and daylight threshold to suit actual movement through the area. Where users may need a continuous-light mode, the control arrangement should be explained clearly. An unusually high switching frequency can shorten some fittings’ life, so the delay should not be set simply to the shortest available time. Any altered fixed wiring needs appropriate electrical verification.

Typical enquiries

When this work may be needed

01

A storeroom light switches off while staff are still working inside.

02

An entrance sensor comes on repeatedly whenever trees move in strong winds.

03

A new LED floodlight flickers when connected to an old motion detector.

Frequently asked questions

Occupancy & Motion Sensor Lighting: frequently asked questions

Can a motion sensor be connected to any LED light?

Not automatically. Relay rating, leakage current, driver type and the existing wiring arrangement must be compatible.

Will a sensor reduce electricity usage?

It can reduce unnecessary operating time in suitable spaces, although savings depend on how lights were previously used and how the sensor is set.

Why does my sensor switch on with nobody outside?

Heat movement, vegetation, nearby traffic, mounting direction or equipment faults can all be contributing factors.
