Outdoor & Security Lighting Cape Town

Outdoor lighting has to manage weather, cable protection and sensible light placement, not just brightness. We plan how a fitting will be powered and maintained before it goes on a wall or boundary.

Outdoor lighting has to manage weather, cable protection and sensible light placement, not just brightness.

Garden, perimeter, entrance and movement-sensor lighting installations and repairs for Cape Town properties.

01

Start with the area that needs to be visible

An entrance path needs even illumination without glare; a driveway may benefit from controlled directional light; a boundary needs a considered balance between coverage and disturbance to neighbours. We discuss how the space is used rather than assume one powerful floodlight is the answer.

For security lighting, the position of sensors, gates and movement routes matters. A sensor pointed at swaying branches, moving traffic or a busy pavement can cause constant false activations. The location and detection settings should be planned together.

02

Water and UV exposure change the specification

External fittings, junction boxes and wiring need suitable environmental protection. Water can enter through poorly sealed glands or cable routes and later cause tripping, corrosion or failed lights. We inspect the existing arrangement when diagnosing outdoor faults.

A new cable may be routed in conduit, through a wall or across a garden according to the site. Mechanical protection, drainage, safe fixings and the intended route all affect the installation scope. Outdoor work should not rely on unprotected indoor wiring.

03

Mains-connected versus standalone solar lights

Solar security lights without a fixed grid connection can be useful where cable routing is difficult, but their performance depends on panel position, battery capacity and the light control settings. Mains-connected lighting offers different operational considerations and may require a new circuit or switching.

We discuss power-source options openly. A small standalone garden light is not the same as a fixed solar PV installation connected to the property electrical system, which has separate compliance obligations.

04

Testing after installation

We check the fitted light direction, switching or sensor operation and, where applicable, circuit safety. Users should understand how to adjust timers and sensors without disturbing electrical wiring.

If an existing outdoor light keeps tripping, we investigate the cable and moisture exposure before replacing only the lamp head. Repeated failures often point to an installation detail that needs correcting.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about outdoor & security lighting

Why does my outdoor light trip when it rains?

Water ingress or insulation faults in exterior equipment are possibilities. Stop resetting repeatedly and arrange testing.

Can motion sensors work with LEDs?

Yes, provided the sensor and connected fittings are compatible and positioned correctly.

Are standalone solar garden lights subject to solar PV registration?

The City distinguishes portable or standalone garden lights from electricity-connected PV systems; the installation type matters.
