Site assessment and work planning

01

Trace how moisture reached the enclosure

Condensation inside a board is different from rainwater entering through a cracked cover or cable hole. We inspect the location, cable glands, conduit entries, door gasket and mounting angle. A box may be nominally weather-resistant but lose protection through poorly sealed drilling or an unsuitable replacement latch. Persistent water ingress can corrode protective devices and terminals, so wiping the inside dry without finding the route is not a lasting repair.

02

Assess enclosure rating and site exposure

An IP rating must suit the site and the actual installed assembly, including glands, vents and cable entries. Coastal properties require attention to corrosion, while direct sun can increase internal temperature and affect plastic housings. We examine the dimensions of existing protective devices, available working clearance and whether circuits are correctly labelled. If the proposed location is repeatedly flooded or receives direct spray, a different position may be preferable to adding sealant to a failing enclosure.

03

Separate enclosure work from damaged circuit repairs

A new box does not automatically make existing protective equipment safe. Any signs of tracking, burn marks, rust, overheated insulation or unreliable tripping call for electrical investigation. We check whether a safe temporary supply arrangement is possible when the board must be isolated. Replacing individual parts and extending conductors need to be assessed as part of the electrical design; connections hidden inside unsuitable junctions are not an acceptable shortcut.

04

Finish with testing and safe access

When fixed electrical work is performed, the installation should be tested and the documentation appropriate to the scope supplied by authorised personnel. The board needs a closure that users can operate safely without defeating its environmental protection. We discuss which circuits can be isolated locally and why owners should avoid opening a wet distribution board. Routine inspection of exposed seals and hinges can catch deterioration before a storm causes a dangerous fault.

Typical enquiries

When this work may be needed

01

An outside DB trips after winter rain and the lower cable gland is wet.

02

A coastal property has corroded hinges and unreadable circuit labels.

03

A garden pump board is mounted directly under roof runoff.

Frequently asked questions

Outdoor Electrical DB Enclosures & Water Ingress Repairs: frequently asked questions

Can silicone sealant fix a leaking DB?

Sealant may not restore the correct protection and can trap moisture. We need to identify the entry route and assess the full enclosure.

Should I reset the breaker if the DB is wet?

No. Keep clear of the enclosure and arrange qualified electrical inspection; water exposure can make access unsafe.

Do all outdoor boards need replacing?

Not necessarily. A sound enclosure with a repairable external fitting may be serviceable, but damaged or incorrectly rated boards may need replacement.
