What the work involves and how we assess it

01

Describe the equipment, not only the socket position

A garden supply for decorative lighting has different needs from a high-demand pump or pool accessory. We ask what equipment will be connected, its rating and whether the point is used permanently or occasionally. Outdoor access, children, irrigation spray and maintenance activities influence position and enclosure selection. A weather-resistant faceplate is not enough if its wiring and protection are inappropriate.

02

Route wiring around water and landscaping

Cable routing must account for digging, paving, edges, buried services and exposure to the elements. Where a point is added near a water feature or pump, supply arrangement and isolation require special care. We coordinate with landscaping and plumbing work when pipe trenches and cable routes share a project, but do not place water and electrical services together without appropriate separation and design.

03

Protection, switching and equipment isolation

Outdoor circuits need suitable protective arrangements, cable type, equipment ratings and accessible means of isolation. A new socket is not simply tapped from any nearby indoor outlet. We review available capacity and whether a dedicated circuit is warranted. The correct design will depend on equipment specifications, the environment and applicable wiring rules; electrical work must be tested before the area is reinstated.

04

Planning a durable finish

Customers can help by marking the proposed location and identifying paving, retaining edges or irrigation lines that might affect access. The scope may involve trenching, conduit, a distribution board connection, weather-rated accessories and testing. We discuss who will reinstate paving or garden beds and whether additional landscape lighting or equipment supplies should be planned at the same time.

Situations to discuss

Common job conditions that change the approach

Describe what you have observed before requesting work. These examples are not substitutes for an on-site diagnosis.

Outdoor fridge on an extension reel

Check the actual load and safe permanent supply options before making the arrangement permanent.

Power point beside sprinkler spray

Review location and protection against wetting rather than trusting a generic indoor socket cover.

Supply needed before new patio paving

Plan the cable route and conduit before hard surfaces are finished.

Preparing the request

What to have ready before arranging an assessment

Photograph the proposed location and explain whether it is beneath an eave, exposed to rain, close to a sprinkler or alongside a new paved area. A fixed socket serving an occasional lawn tool is not equivalent to a continuous supply for a pump. Providing the equipment rating allows the electrician to evaluate circuit needs before choosing accessories.

If trenching is involved, make a note of irrigation pipes and other buried services and identify who will restore the surface afterward. Where exterior lights and garden equipment are being installed together, cable planning can reduce repeated digging. Any work near a pool, water feature or other wet environment requires particular attention to the applicable protective requirements.

For a garden that is still being landscaped, it may be worth planning one protected route that accommodates future equipment, even if only one outlet is fitted now. Such planning should never mean leaving unprotected live cable or uncertified spare connections buried under soil for later use.

Frequently asked questions

Outdoor Power Points & Weatherproof Electrical Supplies: questions

Can any plug point be installed outside?

No. The full circuit, enclosure, routing and protection must suit the environment.

Can outdoor power share my garden-light circuit?

Suitability depends on connected loads and protection; it should not be assumed.

Do you reinstate paving?

That must be included explicitly in the quoted scope.
