Oven & Hob Electrical Connections: practical assessment and clear next steps

Electrical supply assessment and compliant connection work for ovens, electric hobs and cooking appliances.

01

Check the appliance demand against the installation

A built-in oven and separate electric hob may have different supply and protection requirements. The rating plate and manufacturer instructions matter more than how the previous appliance was connected. We review the intended arrangement, whether appliances share a circuit and whether the distribution board has appropriate capacity.

An old cable or isolator that appears to have worked before does not prove it is suited to a new appliance. We do not recommend changing protective devices, modifying fixed wiring or extending cables without electrical assessment. Connection work should be handled by qualified personnel.

02

New appliance, existing space

Kitchen replacements often expose limited access behind cupboards, damaged connection points or an isolator placed where it is difficult to reach. Appliance ventilation and cabinetry clearances must follow manufacturer requirements, while electrical work needs proper cable protection and secure connections.

Where cabinetry or countertops are being modified, coordinate the work before final installation. We can explain the electrical prerequisites so the kitchen contractor knows which components must remain accessible and which work must finish before the appliance is fitted.

03

Investigating tripping and poor performance

An oven that trips protection when heating may have an element, insulation or circuit problem. A hob that loses a zone can be an appliance fault rather than a supply issue. We begin by separating the fixed installation from the appliance symptoms, rather than assuming an entire circuit needs replacement.

Repeated breaker resets are not a safe diagnostic process. If there is burning smell, visible cable damage or a hot connection point, stop using the appliance and request a qualified inspection.

04

What to send for an accurate enquiry

Provide the make and model of the appliance, its electrical rating if accessible, whether it is a new installation or replacement and photographs of the existing isolator and connection area. Identify any previous trip or supply problems and whether the kitchen is undergoing renovation.

The work may involve inspection, correction of an existing connection, provision of a suitable circuit or final appliance connection. We confirm the scope after reviewing the site and requirements.

Common enquiries

Common situations and the appropriate starting point

The nature of the symptoms and the property arrangement affect what should be checked first. We use that information when discussing your enquiry.

Replacing a gas hob with electric

The existing gas appliance position does not establish adequate electrical wiring for a new high-demand hob.

Separate oven and induction hob

Confirm both models’ electrical ratings and the manufacturer’s required isolators and circuits before installation.

Oven trips only when hot

Heating-element or insulation faults may be involved; the supply circuit also needs checking where symptoms warrant it.

Planning the job

Coordination with cabinetry and appliance delivery

An appliance delivery team may place the unit into a cabinet without being responsible for the permanent wiring or suitability of the supply. We recommend confirming electrical readiness before the installation date, including any required dedicated circuit, isolator location and manufacturer clearances. This can prevent a newly delivered hob sitting unused while further electrical work is arranged.

When an older cooker is being removed, ask the installer to identify whether cabling or terminals show signs of heat or deterioration. The new appliance should not inherit a damaged connection simply because the old one appeared functional. Electrical testing and any required certification should reflect the final installation.

Clear job scope

What shapes the assessment and quotation?

The work is defined around the installation, access and decisions specific to oven & hob electrical connections.

We explain the proposed work and any site-specific cost factors before you decide to proceed. The final quotation depends on what is needed at your property.

Frequently asked questions

Oven & Hob Electrical Connections: FAQs

Can I connect a new hob to my old oven wiring?

Not without confirming the electrical ratings and cable/protection suitability. A qualified electrician needs to check the arrangement.

Why does the breaker trip when the oven heats up?

Heating elements, insulation faults or circuit conditions can all be involved. A test is needed before replacing parts.

Do you connect both built-in ovens and electric hobs?

We assess permanent electrical connections for cooking appliances and confirm what is required for the specific models.
