Why the edge matters to maintenance
Garden edging gives a boundary between lawn, paths, planted beds and gravel. A tidy appearance is only part of its purpose. Poorly installed edges can creep across a lawn, obstruct mowing, trap water or become a trip hazard. We ask which surfaces meet, whether the edge needs to hold soil and whether lawn roots regularly invade the bed. The answer determines whether a flush mowing strip, low flexible edge, masonry restraint or raised border makes sense. A decorative border is not automatically a structural retaining feature.
