A gravel courtyard used by people walking to the washing line needs different stone sizes and compaction from a decorative bed around succulents. Build the base without blocking drainage

An appropriate separation layer may reduce mixing between soil and aggregate but is not a cure for persistent roots or poorly graded ground. Impermeable sheeting used without thought can redirect water into walls or puddles. For a path, the prepared base and edge restraint matter as much as the visible stone. On a sloped site, erosion and retention features may be required to prevent material washing downhill.

Keep stone away from vulnerable details

A finished surface should not cover airbricks, damp-proof-course details or accessible plumbing valves. Roof downpipes, irrigation emitters and tree-root areas may need openings or altered levels. We plan defined planting beds where plants require enough soil and root space, and use stable edging where the gravel meets lawns or paved areas. Coastal winds, nearby roads and leaf drop can all influence how often the customer will need to tidy the finished installation.

Agree maintenance and material quantities honestly

The quotation should identify the stone type, depth, base preparation, edging, disposal and any planting work. A surface that looks neat on day one still needs occasional debris removal and weed control. We estimate quantities based on measured area and depth rather than a generic bag count. If the site also needs drainage repair or major levelling, those are separate work items. The result should be both attractive and easy for the property owner to maintain.
