Service assessment and practical solutions

01

Identify the problem before moving soil

Not every uneven garden needs to be made perfectly flat. A small dip may collect water because a drain is blocked, while a sloping lawn may direct rain safely away from the building. We ask what the space will be used for, where water currently travels and which levels must remain unchanged near doors, foundations and neighbouring land. A grading proposal considers the fall needed for drainage and the effect of raising soil against damp-proofing, paving or existing vegetation.

02

Separate topsoil correction from bulk earthworks

Light surface dressing can smooth shallow undulations, but significant cut-and-fill work needs more planning and possibly specialist equipment. Removing too much soil around mature trees can damage their roots; placing heavy fill against trunks can also cause decline. We consider whether the existing soil can be reused, whether unsuitable material needs removal and how the area will be accessed without damaging gates or pavements. The final soil layer must suit turf or planting rather than simply looking level from a distance.

03

Plan drainage outlets before finishing surfaces

Grading can worsen flooding when it sends water toward a wall or prevents runoff from reaching a legitimate outlet. Cape Town’s winter rainfall makes this particularly important for low-lying courtyards and slopes above garages. We assess whether surface shaping is enough or a separate drainage solution should be considered. A compacted subsoil layer can trap water even after new topsoil is spread. We avoid guaranteeing a dry garden without understanding groundwater, drainage capacity and rainwater inflow from surrounding areas.

04

Agree how the completed level will be checked

The proposal should identify finished levels, areas to be protected and the materials involved. Turf installation may follow, but the timing should allow appropriate soil preparation and settlement. We discuss how the customer will access the garden during work and whether irrigation lines need rerouting. After grading, owners should know where to avoid placing heavy items until soil is stable. Hard retaining structures or major structural earthworks are separately assessed rather than implied by basic garden levelling.

Common enquiries and what changes the job

Lawn has ankle-twisting dips

Determine whether surface grading or underlying drainage repair will produce a lasting result.

Patio drains toward house wall

A new fall direction and suitable legal outlet may be needed before relaying surfaces.

Garden bed is higher than damp-proof course

Levels may require careful reduction rather than adding yet more soil or mulch.

Before booking

Information that helps define the work

Send a rough site plan, photographs after rain and the intended final use of the area. Mark any known pipes, irrigation lines or drains.

Confirm access width for wheelbarrows or machinery and whether spoil can remain on site or needs disposal.

Frequently asked questions

Garden Ground Levelling & Surface Grading: customer questions

Can you simply fill every hollow with topsoil?

Small hollows sometimes allow surface correction, but deep or wet dips may require drainage and subsoil investigation.

Will levelling stop my garden flooding?

Only if the cause relates to surface levels and a suitable drainage route exists; groundwater and blocked drains may also matter.

Should grading happen before new lawn?

Usually site levels and soil preparation are addressed first so new turf is not repeatedly disturbed.
