A new lawn succeeds or fails largely in the soil beneath it.

Garden lawn preparation, new turf installation and establishment planning suited to Cape Town properties.

01

Choose the lawn for the way the garden will be used

A sunny family play area needs different characteristics from a partly shaded courtyard or ornamental front garden. Grass varieties differ in shade tolerance, growth habit, water demand and ability to recover from wear.

We discuss sun exposure, foot traffic, pets and maintenance expectations. A fast-growing grass may cover bare ground well but require more mowing; a slower-growing option may suit a different garden where its light and care needs are met.

02

Prepare the ground before laying any turf

Building debris, compacted soil, hidden roots and poor drainage can undermine even healthy roll-on lawn. Preparation may require removing old growth, correcting levels, improving soil structure and establishing a suitably firm, even surface.

We also consider levels near paving and door thresholds. A lawn finished too high can push soil toward entrances or create runoff problems, while an uneven base causes low spots where water accumulates.

03

Watering and establishment

Fresh turf and seeded lawns need a carefully planned establishment period. The method and timing must respect current City of Cape Town water rules and any applicable restrictions. We consider whether an existing irrigation system covers the proposed lawn evenly.

We explain that establishment needs suitable moisture, controlled foot traffic and follow-up maintenance. The first mow, feeding and adjustment of irrigation depend on the grass and growing conditions rather than a fixed one-size-fits-all date.

04

Repair patches or replace everything?

A small worn area may be caused by shade, dogs, irrigation coverage or compacted soil. Relaying the same turf without correcting the source can repeat the failure. We review the wider lawn before recommending patch work, a partial renovation or a full new surface.

For landlords and complexes, we discuss access, green-waste handling and protection of new turf while tenants and contractors move through the property.

Scope & quotation

What determines the work required?

Local water rules: Cape Town has permanent water-saving regulations and can implement additional restrictions. Consult the City’s current water restrictions and regulations when planning irrigation or establishment watering.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about new lawn installation

Can turf grow in a shady courtyard?

Shade tolerance varies by grass. Deep shade may require another groundcover or a different landscape design.

Should irrigation be installed before lawn laying?

Where an irrigation system is planned, establishing its pipework and coverage before turf is often more practical.

How soon can children use a new lawn?

Use should be restricted while the roots establish; timing varies with season, grass and site conditions.
