Water-wise landscaping is about designing a garden around its climate, soil and actual use.

Water-efficient garden planning, drought-conscious planting and irrigation improvements for Cape Town properties.

01

Design around sun, soil and the shape of the site

A west-facing bed that receives strong summer sun has different needs from a shaded courtyard or a sloping garden with runoff. Before choosing plants, we consider exposure, drainage and where people need usable outdoor space.

Grouping plants with similar water needs allows irrigation to be planned more intelligently. Soil improvement and appropriate mulching can help retain moisture, while a poorly drained bed may need changes before adding drought-tolerant species.

02

Plant selection and landscape character

Indigenous and climate-suited species can reduce water demand when selected for the right conditions, but “indigenous” is not a guarantee that every plant will thrive in every garden. Mature size, root behaviour, wind exposure and seasonal appearance all matter.

We discuss whether you prefer flowering beds, privacy screening, open family space or low-maintenance textures. The design should balance visual appeal, future care and realistic water availability rather than rely on a generic list of plants.

03

Irrigation efficiency and the City’s rules

Drip irrigation can direct water to planting zones while correctly selected sprinklers may suit a lawn. Leaking joints, overspray onto paving and incorrect controller settings waste water regardless of equipment quality.

Cape Town has permanent water-saving regulations, and additional restrictions can apply when announced. We plan irrigation in line with the current rules and explain that newly planted landscapes still require an appropriate establishment period.

04

Renovating an existing high-water-use garden

A transformation does not always require removing every healthy plant or all the lawn. We can assess opportunities to reduce thirsty areas, improve soil, replace unsuitable planting and adjust watering zones while keeping features that work.

The proposed scope can be staged: first fix irrigation leaks and drainage, then prepare selected beds, then plant and mulch. Clear sequencing helps avoid disturbing new plants when plumbing or paving work is still outstanding.
