Garden Soakaways & Infiltration Trenches Cape Town

Recurring surface water in a garden may need controlled infiltration rather than another drain grate. We review the ground conditions, roof-water inputs and where excess water can safely go.

Garden Soakaways & Infiltration Trenches: how we approach the work

01

Find the source of ponding before digging

Water that sits after heavy winter rain can come from compacted soil, an obstructed outlet, poor grading or roof runoff directed into one low point. A soaked lawn is not automatically suitable for a soakaway. We observe the catchment, low points and nearby buildings, then discuss whether the issue is surface drainage, subsurface water or a plumbing leak. Water that accumulates beside a retaining wall or foundation needs particular care because uncontrolled infiltration can worsen moisture problems.

02

Assess soil conditions and the feasibility of infiltration

A soakaway is designed to let collected water disperse into suitable surrounding ground. Soil permeability, available space, underground services and separation from structures affect whether it is appropriate. Sandy ground can behave differently from clay-rich fill or an area over rock. Where an infiltration test or drainage design is needed, that must be included in the scope; we do not promise that a trench full of stone will work at every site.

03

Plan overflow, access and stormwater responsibilities

Even a well-designed system has limits during extreme rainfall. A sensible approach considers where water should go if the soakaway reaches capacity and whether a lawful drainage outlet exists. Sending water onto a neighbour’s property or into a wastewater sewer is not an acceptable shortcut. We discuss silt traps, access for maintenance, surface finishing and any approval needed for changes to stormwater infrastructure. This is distinct from connecting an underground plumbing waste line.

04

Protect the finished garden and monitor performance

Excavation and trench material can disturb established roots, paving and irrigation lines. The quotation should state whether the work includes reinstating lawns and beds and how the inlet can be cleaned. Accumulated fine soil can eventually restrict infiltration, so maintenance access matters. Where standing water is caused by a deeper site drainage or structural problem, we explain why a landscaping-only fix is insufficient and a drainage designer or other specialist may be needed.

Situations worth discussing

What the symptoms may mean

A lawn stays saturated after winter rain

Assess grading and infiltration before replacing grass.

Downpipes discharge beside the house

Plan safe collection and lawful overflow away from sensitive building areas.

Water washes mulch from a planted slope

Consider runoff interception and erosion protection as well as infiltration.

Planning & quotation

What affects the work and the quotation?

We agree on the inspection or installation scope before substantial changes proceed. Site conditions and product compatibility matter more than an unverified fixed price.

Frequently asked questions

Garden Soakaways & Infiltration Trenches: frequently asked questions

Will a soakaway work in any soil?

No. Ground permeability and available space determine feasibility.

Can it take wastewater from the kitchen?

A stormwater soakaway is not a substitute for an authorised wastewater drainage system.

Is more gravel always enough to solve flooding?

No. The inlet, soil and overflow route determine performance.
