Service assessment and practical solutions

01

Understand where rainwater enters and leaves

A depression planted with moisture-tolerant vegetation can slow surface runoff, but it must not simply direct rain toward foundations or a neighbour’s property. We begin with roof downpipes, driveway falls, existing drains and the location of seasonal wet patches. A rain garden is appropriate only where ground conditions and safe overflow can be established. It is not a universal replacement for a required stormwater pipe, municipal connection or engineered drainage solution.

02

Check the soil and available footprint

Water can infiltrate quickly through some sandy ground and remain for long periods in compacted or clay-rich soil. That difference affects basin depth, planting and whether an underdrain or alternative outlet is needed. We discuss simple infiltration observations but will not promise a drainage rate before testing. Areas near retaining walls, buried services or septic components need extra assessment. The site must have a safe place for exceptional rainfall to flow when the garden temporarily exceeds its design capacity.

03

Select plants for both dry summer and winter rain

Cape Town gardens often face a dry summer yet have periods of intense winter rainfall. Plant selection should tolerate the actual location, sun exposure, saline coastal winds where relevant, and intermittent saturation. A permanent ornamental pond is different from a vegetated basin designed to drain. Mulch selection, erosion protection and access for weed removal also affect long-term performance. We plan the planted area as part of the whole garden instead of treating it as an isolated trench.

04

Coordinate pipe outlets and ongoing inspection

Where a downpipe feeds the feature, the inlet needs protection from scouring and debris. An overflow may need connection to an existing lawful drainage arrangement and should be designed by the appropriate professional where required. We document which elements are landscaping works and which need engineering input or consent. After construction, the owner should inspect inlets and check how water behaves after storms. A rain garden clogged by sediment will not perform as intended indefinitely.

Common enquiries and what changes the job

Front lawn floods after heavy winter rain

Confirm whether runoff comes from adjacent paving, roof drains or the street before reshaping ground.

Downpipe discharges onto a flowerbed

An inlet and safe overflow may allow a better planted stormwater arrangement.

Site slopes towards the neighbour

Drainage rights and engineered outlet decisions must be clarified before excavation.

Before booking

Information that helps define the work

Send photographs after rainfall, indicate roof downpipe positions and describe how long standing water remains.

Note nearby foundations, boundary walls and buried pipes, and whether a drainage professional has already produced a plan.

Frequently asked questions

Rain Garden & Bioswale Landscape Planning: customer questions

Will a rain garden stop every flood?

No. Capacity depends on site and rainfall; safe overflow and wider drainage problems still need review.

Does it need permanent standing water?

A typical rain garden is designed to drain between events, unlike a permanent pond.

Can it replace a blocked stormwater pipe?

Not automatically. Pipe damage or required connections may still need repair.
