Service assessment and practical solutions

01

Identify the weed before selecting a treatment

A few broadleaf weeds in turf, a perennial vine through shrubs and aggressive grasses in a planting bed need different responses. Before work, we look at how the plant spreads: seed, creeping stems, bulbs or underground roots. Pulling only the visible top may allow the problem to return. We also check whether desirable plants are mixed among the weeds, because broad treatments can damage the garden the customer is trying to protect. The approach should start with identification and site conditions, not immediate chemical application.

02

Manual removal and garden preparation

Manual removal can be appropriate in small beds or around sensitive plants, but the depth and spread of the root system influence labour. Where weeds have occupied an area for years, staged clearing may be more realistic than a single visit. We discuss loosening compacted soil, removing vegetative fragments and how the cleared ground will be replanted or covered. Exposed soil can quickly become reinfested, so a prevention plan matters. Disposal also needs attention where cut weeds contain viable seed or regrowing fragments.

03

Careful chemical use and limits

Any herbicide treatment must use products legally permitted for the target application and follow label, safety and environmental requirements. We do not promise blanket spraying around pets, food crops, waterways or neighbouring plants without assessing the site. Some weeds are better addressed through repeated manual treatment, mulching or changes to irrigation and maintenance. If specialist pesticide licensing is required for a proposed application, that capacity must be confirmed rather than claimed from general landscaping registration.

04

Keep weeds from returning

Weed control is rarely finished when the last visible plant is removed. Open soil, overwatering, thin lawns and neglected borders provide conditions for regrowth. We can discuss realistic maintenance intervals, mulch coverage, lawn repair, bed planting and safe access for ongoing care. Cape Town’s seasonal rains can trigger new flushes of germination while summer irrigation sustains others. Provide photographs showing the whole affected area and nearby desired plants so the quotation addresses the actual extent of work rather than an attractive close-up alone.

Weeds growing through paving

Joint condition and root material must be considered alongside surface removal.

Perennial weed tangled in shrubs

Selective work protects valuable plants better than indiscriminate clearing.

Empty garden bed repeatedly reinfested

The long-term plan should address exposed soil, mulch and follow-up maintenance.

Information that helps define the work

Show the affected area at a distance as well as close-up weeds, and note any pets or food production nearby.

Chemical treatment, if appropriate, must be specifically approved and carried out by competent personnel under product requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Garden Weed Control & Prevention: customer questions

Will weeds be gone after one treatment?

Some annual weeds respond quickly; persistent perennials can require repeated work and prevention.

Is spraying always the quickest answer?

Not always. Surrounding plants, food gardens, pets, water and product restrictions may make manual methods preferable.

Why do weeds come back after clearing?

Dormant seeds, regrowth fragments and exposed soil can all contribute. A maintenance plan helps manage recurrence.
