Service assessment and practical solutions

01

Choose the right material for the job

Mulch and compost serve related but different purposes. Compost is decomposed organic matter used to improve soil condition, while surface mulch primarily protects the soil, moderates temperature and suppresses some weed emergence. Applying the same material everywhere can cause problems in heavy soil, around drought-adapted plants or where water already stands. We ask what is planted, whether soil is sandy or compacted and how irrigation reaches the bed. The recommended layer depends on plant needs, existing soil and the client’s maintenance priorities.

02

Apply around plants without creating new risks

Piling organic mulch directly against trunks and crown bases can trap moisture and encourage deterioration. A careful installation keeps plant stems clear and checks that irrigation water can still reach the root zone. On steep beds, loose material may wash toward paths or stormwater drains. We assess edging, wind exposure and whether an alternative coarse material would stay in place better. Where beds are already infested with perennial weeds, preparatory control is usually needed; a surface layer alone will not remove established roots.

03

Soil improvement depends on what is missing

Compost can improve soil structure, but it should not be treated as a substitute for correcting severe drainage or poor irrigation design. In a new bed, preparation depth and mixing method matter. Established planting may be better served by a carefully applied top-dressing rather than disturbing mature roots. We consider plant nutrition, available soil testing and whether amendments are suitable for local indigenous or water-wise species. Imported material quality matters too: contaminated or poorly matured compost can introduce weed seeds and pests.

04

Seasonal planning and delivery access

Cape Town’s warm, windy periods can dry exposed soil quickly, while winter rainfall may move poorly secured material. We recommend timing and aftercare appropriate to the planting and current water-use restrictions. Quote information should include approximate bed area, slopes, access for material deliveries and whether old material must be removed first. We describe soil preparation, quantities and finishing separately so a client knows whether the job is a light protective layer or a larger renovation of exhausted beds.

Common enquiries and what changes the job

Established shrub bed dries too quickly

Surface mulch may reduce exposed-soil evaporation, but irrigation distribution and soil condition should be reviewed.

Mulch washes onto paving

Slope, edging and material size need consideration before adding another layer.

New beds have poor soil

Choose compost and preparation based on the underlying soil, not just the appearance of the top layer.

Before booking

Information that helps define the work

Send bed sizes, plant types if known, and photographs showing slopes and irrigation points.

Clarify whether the quote should include material delivery, weed preparation, compost mixing and removal of old mulch.

Frequently asked questions

Garden Mulching & Compost Application: customer questions

Is mulch the same as compost?

No. Compost primarily improves soil; mulch is usually left on the surface to protect it and moderate moisture loss.

Should mulch touch tree trunks?

Generally keep it away from the trunk and plant crown so the base is not held excessively wet.

Will mulch remove established weeds?

It may suppress some new growth, but established perennial weeds can require separate control before application.
