Service assessment and practical solutions

01

Study how the path is actually used

A step run between a driveway and garden gate has different use patterns from informal steps between planting terraces. We ask who uses the route, whether children or older visitors need support and what happens during winter rain. Step geometry should feel consistent underfoot; irregular risers are uncomfortable and may increase trip risk. Where a steep slope, fall exposure or retaining construction is involved, suitable structural design and approvals may be necessary before construction proceeds.

02

Choose a base and finish for outdoor conditions

Durability depends on more than the colour of the paver. The underlying ground, edge restraint, drainage and material slip resistance are important, particularly where algae can develop in shaded damp areas. Timber, stone and concrete units each have different maintenance and fixing requirements. We consider whether the site permits excavation without undermining nearby walls or tree roots. A stable route with predictable steps is preferable to decorative pieces set loosely into eroding soil.

03

Direct runoff away from the walking line

Water flowing down a staircase can remove bedding material and create slippery surfaces. The route may need side drainage, landings or reshaped ground, depending on slope and available outfall. Lighting can help pedestrians see the step edges, but electrical work should be coordinated and designed separately. We look at where irrigation sprays and gutters discharge so the new route is not continually soaked. Landscaping should not block existing drainage inspection points or wall vents.

04

Define the boundary between landscaping and structure

A few ground-supported landscape steps differ significantly from a tall retaining staircase. Structural stability, handrails or building requirements must be assessed by the appropriate specialist where necessary. We document the planned route and finish, then discuss excavation, base preparation and reinstatement. Owners should understand that adjacent planting, irrigation relocation and electrical step lighting are optional parts of the project unless included in the agreed scope.

Common enquiries and what changes the job

Garden route becomes slippery in rain

Surface choice, drainage and shade need attention, not just a fresh layer of paint.

Steep slope connects two patios

Step dimensions and any necessary retaining design need careful assessment.

Steps cross an existing sprinkler zone

Irrigation routes should be identified and adjusted before the base is placed.

Frequently asked questions

Garden Steps & Sloped Path Access: customer questions

Can steps be built on any garden slope?

The ground conditions and structural requirements determine what is safe; steep slopes may need professional design.

Are smooth outdoor tiles suitable for steps?

Not automatically. Surface grip in wet conditions matters more than appearance alone.

Can step lighting be included?

Yes as a separately scoped electrical coordination item, with a suitable protected outdoor supply.
