Service assessment and practical solutions

01

Decide what needs to pass through the path

A narrow planted stepping-stone route, open-jointed paving and a gravel pedestrian path behave differently under rain and wheel traffic. The path must suit the people using it: residents carrying shopping, a garden worker with a wheelbarrow or a person using a mobility aid. Uneven stepping stones may be attractive but impractical for some users. We first establish route width, daily traffic, turning points and where the path sits relative to doors, ramps and lawn.

02

Check runoff and the real permeability of the base

A porous-looking surface laid over sealed concrete will not magically absorb rain. Effective permeable construction depends on the entire layer system: surface, bedding, base, soil and any intended outlet. Where soils drain slowly or water tables rise in winter, an alternative drainage route may be needed. We look for downpipes discharging nearby, rising damp at walls and changes in level that could send runoff onto a neighbour. This assessment prevents the term “permeable” being used as a misleading product label.

03

Choose stable edges and suitable wet-weather finishes

The surface needs adequate restraint to avoid spreading, ruts or tripping edges as the ground moves. Smooth finishes in shaded Cape Town gardens can become slippery during winter; texture and maintenance matter. For accessibility, a firm, stable and suitably level route may take priority over highly loose gravel. We discuss the landscape appearance with practical cleaning and plant-root growth in mind. If the path crosses significant tree roots, a specialist approach may be needed to avoid long-term damage.

04

Define what the quote includes

A proper quote identifies excavation, removed material, base specification, surface units, edges, drainage arrangements and connections to existing thresholds. Larger structural paving work may require a different construction design than a small footpath. We do not promise that every site can infiltrate stormwater without soil assessment. After installation, the owner should know which joints need occasional clearing and how to avoid clogging the surface with fine garden soil.

Recognise the situation

Common enquiries and what changes the job

Wet rear path is slippery each winter

Texture and drainage may be more important than replacing tiles with similar smooth units.

Garden route must accommodate a wheelchair

A firm stable path and correct gradient should guide the chosen construction.

Downpipe pours across the proposed path

An inlet or drainage detail may be needed before the path is built.

Frequently asked questions

Permeable Garden Walkways & Footpaths: customer questions

Are all paving bricks permeable?

No. Performance depends on the product and full construction layers, not just the gaps.

Is loose gravel suitable for wheelchairs?

Often less suitable than a firm stable surface; the user’s requirements should determine the choice.

Will rain always soak away under the path?

Only where soil conditions and sub-base design allow it, with overflow addressed when necessary.
