Service assessment and practical solutions

01

Plan around the actual pool use

Poolside landscaping should make the space pleasant without dropping large amounts of leaves and seed into the water. We look at which parts of the deck are used for circulation, where people sit and where the prevailing wind carries plant debris. Plants with thorns or rigid branches can be uncomfortable beside narrow walkways. The desired privacy and appearance must be balanced against access for pool maintenance. A lush design can still be impractical if every cleaning cycle is dominated by leaf litter.

02

Consider roots, drainage and existing hard surfaces

Large-growing trees planted close to a pool shell, plumbing or paving can create future conflicts. Soil depth and irrigation layout need particular care near hardscape edges and waterproof surfaces. We assess drainage so beds do not send muddy runoff onto decking or into the pool during heavy rain. Plant choices should account for wet feet, shade and heat reflected from paving. A narrow raised planter may require a very different species palette from an open garden beside a lawn.

03

Coordinate irrigation and electrical features

Garden watering should reach the roots without constantly spraying pool equipment, outdoor sockets or glazed doors. Drip irrigation is sometimes useful where spray drift would be disruptive. If the landscaping includes feature lights, pumps or other electrical equipment, those supplies require a properly scoped electrical design appropriate to the outdoor and pool environment. We do not treat poolside planting as permission to alter a pool’s electrical bonding or circulation system without specialist assessment.

04

Build for maintenance as well as appearance

Poolside planting benefits from an agreed pruning and cleanup routine. Species that stay compact and respond well to shaping may be preferable to fast-growing screens in small spaces. We discuss mulch choices, replacement access and whether the client wants a low-litter appearance year-round. A clear quotation defines plant quantities, soil preparation, border edging and irrigation adjustments. Existing paving repairs and pool equipment changes should be separately identified.

Frequently asked questions

Poolside Planting & Low-Litter Landscaping: customer questions

Which trees are best beside a pool?

Suitability depends on mature roots, leaf drop, available space and local conditions; there is no universal best tree.

Can you install irrigation without spraying the pool?

Appropriate drip or carefully positioned emitters can reduce overspray, subject to the layout.

Do you change pool pumps as part of landscaping?

That is a separate plumbing/electrical service and should be scoped and tested by the relevant specialist.
