Choose a location that can be read and serviced

A meter needs the correct size and orientation for its intended flow. The surrounding pipework should allow safe access for reading, isolation and eventual replacement. We inspect the branch direction, available straight pipe runs where required by the device, valve condition and whether the meter will be exposed to weather. In a complex, meter positions need clear unit identification: a neat row of meters with no durable labels often creates future billing disputes. We plan accessible installation rather than hiding critical components behind permanent finishes.

Distinguish plumbing accuracy from billing systems

The pipe installation is only part of a submetering project. Someone must decide how readings are collected, what billing rules apply and who resolves disputed consumption. A pulse-enabled or smart meter may need separate monitoring hardware and data services; we will not imply that a basic mechanical meter includes remote billing features. For an existing meter that appears to move with taps closed, the next step could be controlled leak investigation, not immediate replacement. Installation work should establish the source and direction of consumption before equipment is ordered.

Cape Town supply boundaries and certificates

The municipal meter and upstream connection are not automatically available for private alteration. Before work, we establish whether the proposed meter will be installed on private downstream pipework and whether body-corporate or landlord consent is required. Will this replace a City water meter?

Usually a private submeter is installed on the property side of the municipal supply. Any work involving the City meter must follow the authority’s process.

Can one meter measure an entire apartment?

Only when all water supplied to that apartment passes through the same measured branch. Shared or bypassed lines can make readings misleading.

Does installation include tenant billing?

Not necessarily. Meter installation, remote data collection and tenant billing administration are separate services and should be specified individually.
