What the work involves and how we assess it

01

Measure the limitation before buying panels

An owner may notice that an existing system produces less than the household needs, but adding panels is not always the right first change. Roof shading, dirty panels, inverter restrictions, seasonal generation and battery charging strategy can each explain disappointing results. We ask for inverter and module model labels, a recent monitoring record and a description of what the customer wants to power. An expansion proposal should begin with system data, not a predetermined number of panels.

02

String layout, inverter limits and panel compatibility

Existing PV strings have electrical characteristics that must remain compatible with inverter input limits and the chosen modules. Mixing different module ratings or connecting additional strings without design checks can reduce performance or create hazardous conditions. Mounting capacity, wind exposure, roof waterproofing and remaining suitable roof space may be as important as electrical capacity. We do not promise that a panel of any brand can simply be added to an older array.

03

Protection and approvals for changed installations

An expanded system may require review of isolators, protective equipment, cable routes and system documentation. Cape Town’s authorisation framework treats modifications and the relevant existing approvals seriously. We distinguish a physical panel expansion from an approved change to the generation installation; alterations requiring City or relevant distributor review should not be energised before the necessary approval and professional sign-off. Equipment changes and application timing must be considered together.

04

When an upgrade is worth quoting

A useful quotation should identify the target outcome, capacity constraints, proposed equipment and risks of retaining old components. In some cases monitoring fixes, roof maintenance or a different inverter arrangement may be more appropriate than more modules. Send a safe photo of the equipment labels, the present system diagram if available and your most recent usage or generation information so we can discuss a sensible site assessment.

Situations to discuss

Common job conditions that change the approach

Describe what you have observed before requesting work. These examples are not substitutes for an on-site diagnosis.

Roof has space but inverter PV input is full

Review manufacturer input limits and alternative configurations before mounting more panels.

New panel model differs from old string

Confirm compatibility and electrical design rather than mixing products by approximate wattage.

Existing approved solar system will change

Check amendment and authorisation requirements before activating a revised system.

Preparing the request

What to have ready before arranging an assessment

An owner considering extra panels should record present inverter output, recent energy consumption and what causes the current shortfall. It might be daytime usage, evening battery capacity, roof shading or a genuine PV generation limit. Those causes lead to different investment choices. A screenshot of monitoring history can help determine what additional site measurements are needed.

The owner should also confirm when the existing PV system was approved and whether a proposed change must be submitted as a modification. Added modules change more than the roof appearance; electrical design, string limits, mounting and testing need review. A written scope should identify which existing components are retained and which need upgrading before recommissioning.

Scope and quotation

What influences the cost and practical work?

The City of Cape Town authorisation guidance applies to relevant new and modified PV and battery systems in its supply area. City-approved inverter arrangements, professional sign-off and authorisation must be addressed before switching on. Other distributors may impose their own rules.

Frequently asked questions

Solar PV System Expansion & Added Panels: questions

Can new panels go on a different roof face?

Possibly, but shading, orientation and separate MPPT/string arrangements need proper design.

Will more panels improve battery capacity?

No. Added generation and stored-energy capacity are different constraints.

Do I need updated City paperwork?

A modification may require approval or updated documentation; verify the case with the relevant electricity provider.
