How we approach borehole pump electrical controls & faults

01

Separate a pump fault from a power-supply fault

A borehole pump that does not deliver water might have a failed motor, a defective control panel, a dry borehole, a blocked line or no electrical supply. Replacing a control box without finding the cause can damage a second component. We start with the fault pattern: does a breaker trip immediately, does the pump start and stop, does it run but move no water, or does the controller show an alarm? Accessible testing of voltage, connections and protection is part of the electrical scope. Water-level and hydraulic checks may require the pump specialist.

02

Control panels and motor protection

Submersible pumps often depend on equipment beyond an ordinary wall switch. Motor-start components, overload protection, contactors, capacitors where applicable, pressure or level switches and dry-run protection should match the motor manufacturer and pump application. Single-phase and three-phase equipment have different control requirements. Incorrect overload settings or repeated forced restarts can result in winding damage. A new panel must account for rated current, cable length, enclosure protection and whether remote sensing or automatic refill is required. The aim is a system that stops safely when conditions are abnormal.

03

Long cable runs and water exposure

Borehole installations commonly route power through a garden, trench or exposed service area before reaching the pump. Cable joints, buried ducts, moisture ingress and mechanical damage can cause intermittent faults that appear only after rain. We distinguish cable testing and secure joint repair from pulling a submerged pump or evaluating its hydraulic performance. Protective earthing, isolation and correct routing are essential around wet ground and metal pipework. No live work or improvised bypassing of protective devices is an acceptable way to keep the pump running.

04

Cape Town property and use cases

Borehole and well-point installations can serve irrigation, tanks and property water-management systems. We ask whether the pump runs manually, uses a timer or responds automatically to tank level and pressure. For shared estates or commercial gardens, the control panel may need clear labelling and an agreed shutdown window. Where municipal and alternative supplies are involved, the water-side cross-connection arrangement also needs a separate plumbing assessment. Provide the pump rating, photos of the control box and visible cable route so we can discuss which electrical and hydraulic trades are needed.

Recognise the situation

Common enquiries and what changes the job

Pump trips only after rain

Water ingress in a joint, enclosure or cable is possible; testing should identify the fault without defeating protective devices.

Controller says “dry run” despite water

Sensor, water level and controller faults must be distinguished before repeatedly resetting the motor.

New three-phase pump is being fitted

Control gear, overloads, cable suitability and phase protection should be checked against the motor nameplate.

Before booking

Information that helps define the work

Photograph the pump motor label if safely accessible, electrical panel, indicated alarms and visible wiring; do not open live equipment.

Describe whether the pump supplies a tank, house or garden, when the fault started, and whether a pump contractor is already involved.

Frequently asked questions

Borehole Pump Electrical Controls & Faults: customer questions

Can a tripping borehole pump just be reset?

A one-off trip needs diagnosis if it recurs. Repeated resets can expose equipment and people to further risk.

Does no water mean an electrical fault?

Not necessarily. Low water level, pump wear or blockages may cause the same symptom as a failed supply.

Can a new pump use the old control box?

Only if its ratings and protective functions suit the replacement motor and installation.
