How we approach intercom & access control electrical supplies

01

Define the failure: power, wiring or device

An intercom that cannot call an apartment may have a failed power supply, damaged cable, defective handset, network problem or programming issue. A gate pedestrian-release fault can likewise originate in the controller rather than the fixed electrical feed. We ask which functions still work, whether the equipment has backup power, and whether more than one dwelling is affected. This avoids replacing power equipment when the problem belongs to the access-control installer. Our initial scope is the electrical supply, tested circuits, suitable protection and coordination with the specialist device technician where needed.

02

Correct supplies and separation

Many access devices operate at extra-low voltage through a manufacturer-approved power unit, not directly from an ordinary 230 V feed. Cable separation, transformer capacity, suitable enclosures and safe isolation matter especially where power and data share a route. A long run to a boundary wall can introduce voltage drop or water ingress. We check the intended mounting position, cable pathway, protection from tampering and how the equipment will be serviced later. Improvised adapters or unprotected joints in a wet pillar can lead to repeat failures.

03

Complexes, tenants and backup requirements

Shared intercom systems affect multiple residents, so a planned interruption needs notice and coordination with the body corporate or managing agent. A system with battery backup might still lose communication if the network router or release controller has no backup. We establish which functions need continuity and what existing circuits supply the entrance equipment. Door locks and emergency egress provisions must remain consistent with the building’s safety arrangements; changing a power feed is not a substitute for a proper access-control safety review.

04

Site inspection and handover

We ask for photos of the indoor power unit, entrance pillar, controller label and any visible distribution board circuit used for the system. The final scope should specify power supply repair, new circuit, cable replacement or coordination with the intercom contractor. Testing must include safe isolation and the operation of the affected electrical supply; handset pairing, cloud access, software and credentials remain specialist device tasks unless separately agreed. This clear boundary helps Cape Town property managers avoid unclear quotes and incomplete handovers.

Common enquiries and what changes the job

Entire apartment block loses entrance calls

Shared supply, distribution and controller issues take priority over individual handset replacement.

Pedestrian release works only when dry

Water at an outdoor junction or gate pillar may be involved; the cable and enclosure need safe testing.

New entrance needs intercom power

Power location, conduit, separation from data and future maintenance access should be planned before paving is closed.

Before booking

Information that helps define the work

Share the brand of the installed system, photographs of the power units and the specific functions that have stopped working.

If a body corporate or security contractor controls access credentials, arrange site access and clarify which party will handle programming after power repairs.

Frequently asked questions

Intercom & Access Control Electrical Supplies: customer questions

Do you configure intercom apps and handsets?

That depends on the device and support arrangement. The fixed electrical supply and manufacturer-specific programming are separate scopes.

Can I power the intercom from a nearby socket?

A new supply must be suitably designed, protected and accessible; improvised adapters are not a durable installation plan.

Why does the lock stop working after power returns?

The controller, power unit, backup battery or lock device may each be involved and need appropriate investigation.
