How we approach small courtyard & townhouse landscaping

01

A small space needs a sharper plan

A narrow townhouse courtyard may need to provide seating, access to an outside tap, washing space and a pleasant view from indoors—all within a few square metres. Adding many unrelated features quickly makes it cluttered. We begin with what the space must do every day and which movement paths cannot be blocked. We then consider one dominant surface and planting that uses available height and corners effectively. A compact site should not be sold a large-garden planting schedule or unnecessary hardscaping just because it looks impressive in a photograph.

02

Light, heat, wind and privacy

A courtyard enclosed by walls can be shaded in winter yet become intensely hot in summer. Wind may funnel through one opening and dry containers faster than ground beds. We review orientation, hours of useful sun, reflective walls, neighbours’ windows and privacy requirements. Suitable plants and screens need room for air circulation and future growth; a dense hedge in a tiny corner can eventually block the only light source. For a coastal balcony or exposed terrace, salt-laden wind and railing safety add constraints that a sheltered ground-level courtyard may not share.

03

Drainage, levels and structural boundaries

A courtyard is often paved over or next to the dwelling’s damp-proofing line. Changing levels without considering door thresholds can direct water into the house. We check drainage outlets, slope, existing waterproofing and whether a slab can carry heavy raised planters. Tall structures, wall fixings and roof terraces may require an engineer or property approval. A neat planting pocket should not cover a drain cover or prevent access to pipes. We treat these practical restrictions as part of the design rather than as unwelcome surprises during construction.

04

Phased installation and maintenance

Some clients prefer a single complete transformation; others need a practical first stage—level the space, fix drainage, install the main surface—before adding screens and plants. We can discuss lighting and irrigation coordination where appropriate, using the relevant electrical and plumbing trades. Maintenance should be straightforward: reachable containers, sensible watering zones and enough room to clean surfaces. Provide a measured sketch and desired functions so we can propose work that improves the way the courtyard is used rather than repeating fashionable features.

Common enquiries and what changes the job

Courtyard gets almost no direct sun

Shade suitability and surface choice matter more than copying a sun-loving plant palette.

Drain is next to the back door

Thresholds, paving falls and outlet access come first; planters and benches follow.

Small terrace is windy and overlooked

Screens and containers require safe fixing and wind assessment, not just taller plants.

Information that helps define the work

Supply approximate length and width, door positions, photos taken at different times and any body-corporate requirements.

Choose your two or three essential uses—seating, play, clothes drying, storage, planting or entertaining—so design decisions have priorities.

Frequently asked questions

Small Courtyard & Townhouse Landscaping: customer questions

Can artificial lawn go in every courtyard?

Not automatically. Drainage, surface heat, cleaning and intended use affect whether it is suitable.

Do I need a full landscape drawing for a small space?

A clear measured layout is usually valuable, but the design detail should match complexity and any required approvals.

Can tall planters be installed on a balcony?

Only after checking load capacity, drainage, fixing safety and any building-management restrictions.
