How we approach vertical gardens, trellises & plant screens

01

Match the structure to the purpose

A trellis for climbing jasmine, a living wall made of modular pockets and a timber privacy screen are different installations. One primarily supports growing plants, another depends on a managed irrigation medium, and another may be structural or decorative with no plants at all. We begin by deciding whether the goal is privacy, a softer boundary, productive planting or improved use of a small courtyard. Weight, exposure and maintenance requirements follow from that choice. A lightweight-looking green wall can become heavy when saturated with water.

02

Anchors, walls and plant growth

A trellis must remain sound as vines thicken and catch wind. Fixings should suit the wall material and avoid water penetration into a boundary or building envelope. A free-standing screen can be preferable where the wall cannot safely accept loads. We check whether service pipes and electrical cables are concealed in the wall before drilling. Fast-growing creepers also need room and planned pruning to avoid damaging gutters, vents or windows. Selection of plants should be based on sun, exposure, rooting space and the long-term size of the species.

03

Watering and drainage for living walls

Vertical planters can dry unevenly, especially in Cape Town’s hot and windy summer periods. A drip system may need pressure regulation, filtration, isolation and drainage to avoid staining walls or flooding walkways. Excess water should not be directed through an apartment wall or onto a neighbour below. We review where the water supply will come from, how filters and emitters can be serviced and where overflow will go. Before committing to a modular system, the owner should understand the replacement costs of planting media, failed emitters and individual plant pockets.

04

Cape Town applications and installation planning

Terraces, narrow side passages and townhouse courtyards can benefit from vertical planting if access and safety are realistic. In coastal settings, wind resistance and corrosion protection are particularly important. We ask for wall dimensions, orientation and photographs showing ground conditions and nearby doors. The quote separates frame, wall fixings, planting, irrigation and any builder or electrical coordination. Where the wall is shared or the property is sectional title, consent may be needed. We would rather deliver a maintainable green feature than an inaccessible installation that declines after the first season.

Common enquiries and what changes the job

Boundary wall cannot carry brackets

A ground-supported screen may be appropriate, subject to stable anchoring and wind loads.

Living wall dries out at the top

Emitter design, pressure and access for maintenance matter more than simply increasing watering time.

Climber blocks a ventilation opening

Plant training and structural position should be adjusted before growth makes access difficult.

Information that helps define the work

Photograph the proposed wall or fence, record approximate height and width and describe sun and wind exposure.

Explain whether you want visual screening, flowering plants, edible climbing crops or a modular vertical garden with irrigation.

Frequently asked questions

Vertical Gardens, Trellises & Plant Screens: customer questions

Can a vertical garden survive without irrigation?

Some planting arrangements can be hand watered, but exposed modular systems often need reliable, maintainable watering.

Will a trellis damage the wall?

Unsuitable fixings or unmanaged plant growth can. The support method and wall condition should be assessed first.

Can it be installed on any apartment balcony?

No. Load limits, drainage, fall protection and building rules may restrict what is safe and permitted.
