Site assessment and work planning

01

Plan appliance positions before pipe routes

Moving a washing machine to a scullery, garage or converted storeroom changes the plumbing requirements. We assess the cold-water feed, appliance inlet location, floor levels and the route to an appropriate waste connection. The space needs room for opening appliance doors and servicing the taps, not just enough width to push a machine into a cupboard. Stacked equipment, laundry troughs and water-filter systems can all compete for the same area. A short site review before tiling or cabinet installation avoids inaccessible valves and awkward hose bends.

02

Design a drain that accepts pump discharge

A washing machine releases water in bursts, so a drain arrangement that copes with a basin may still overflow during a wash cycle. We consider pipe diameter, waste gradients, trap arrangements and appliance-maker installation heights rather than guessing a universal standpipe dimension. A hose should not be forced into a sealed connection that interferes with air movement or siphoning. Where existing drains back up, we first establish whether the problem is the standpipe, downstream pipework or an unrelated sewer restriction.

03

Keep water isolation and spill protection practical

A dedicated, accessible appliance shut-off can make a leaking hose much easier to manage. We inspect the condition of existing taps, braided hoses, wall penetrations and any concealed joints. Floors, skirting and cabinetry also influence whether a leak becomes visible early or spreads behind finishes. Where a laundry is upstairs or within a cupboard, the project may need a separate discussion about drainage trays, waterproofing and suitable leak detection; these should not be assumed to be included in basic piping work.

04

Coordinate the utility sink and electrical work

A laundry trough needs appropriate cold and, where requested, hot water connections plus a trapped outlet that can be cleaned. Appliance electrical outlets and wet areas must be assessed by qualified personnel when circuits are altered. We coordinate the sequence so water pipework, cabinets, splashbacks and electrical points do not obstruct one another. Before handover, the fittings and outlets are tested with normal flow and an actual appliance cycle where the machine is available.

Frequently asked questions

Laundry Room Plumbing & Utility Sink Installation: frequently asked questions

Can a washing machine share the kitchen sink waste?

Some arrangements can be suitable, but capacity, trap location, hose routing and the appliance instructions must be checked. A connection that repeatedly overflows needs redesign, not a tighter hose clamp.

Must the laundry have a hot-water connection?

Many modern washers use cold water only. The machine manual and any utility sink requirements determine whether a hot line is necessary.

Do you install the washing machine as well?

We can assess the plumbing connection and coordinate installation requirements. The quote will identify whether machine positioning and testing are included.
