Service assessment and practical solutions

01

Know the difference between a new socket and a new circuit

Adding a wall outlet to an existing ring or radial arrangement does not necessarily give an appliance an independent supply. Some appliances place sustained demand on wiring and connections that were intended for mixed household use. We check the manufacturer’s rating plate, connected load and recommended protection before considering a dedicated line. The existing distribution board must have both appropriate protection and available capacity. A correctly installed socket does not automatically fix nuisance trips on an overloaded circuit.

02

Assess the electrical load and diversity

Households increasingly operate several heating and motor-driven appliances at the same time. A tumble dryer, washing machine and portable heater sharing one circuit can make existing protection unsuitable for the pattern of use. We look at the proposed appliance, available supply and existing load rather than simply adding the amperages on paper without considering operation. The route length, cable type, installation conditions and protective device selection must all be checked against the applicable electrical rules.

03

Design the route around completed finishes

A new supply may need to cross a ceiling, pass through a suitable wall cavity or travel in surface containment. A neat route should still allow safe support, mechanical protection and later testing. In apartments, drilling through fire-separating walls or shared ducts can trigger permission and reinstatement requirements. For an outside workshop or laundry room, the enclosure and environmental exposure matter. We agree on visible trunking versus concealed work before quoting labour and finishing.

04

Verify operation and document the new work

Completed work needs appropriate continuity, insulation and protection tests before being placed into service. Labelling the new circuit makes future fault finding easier, particularly when several appliances look similar in the DB. We also confirm that the intended equipment can be isolated appropriately and that no existing safety device has been bypassed. If an old circuit is defective, we explain why creating a parallel supply without resolving the original hazard is not a safe shortcut.

Common enquiries and what changes the job

Tumble dryer trips the kitchen circuit

A separate line may be appropriate after confirming the appliance itself is not faulty.

Workshop machine arrives with a new plug

Its rating and duty may require a purpose-designed fixed supply rather than an adaptor.

Landlord upgrades laundry facilities

Routing, tenant access and a clear circuit label should be planned with the property manager.

Before booking

Information that helps define the work

Send an appliance rating-plate photograph, proposed position and any existing socket location. Describe what trips or becomes hot when it operates.

Let us know if the walls are finished, the unit is sectional-title, or the proposed cable route crosses a common area.

Frequently asked questions

Dedicated Appliance Power Circuits: customer questions

Can I use a multiplug for a high-load appliance?

An adaptor is not a substitute for an appropriately rated fixed installation, particularly for sustained loads.

Will a dedicated circuit fix a faulty appliance?

Not necessarily. If the appliance has an internal defect, a separate circuit may still trip.

Does a new cable require testing?

Yes. The completed installation requires appropriate inspection and electrical tests before it is used.
