How we approach solar geyser & thermal water heater installation

01

Solar thermal is not rooftop PV

A solar water heater captures the sun’s heat to warm water. Photovoltaic solar panels produce electrical power and require a different inverter and approval process. Homeowners often use the word “solar” for both, which can lead to a mismatched quote. We first establish whether the customer wants to heat water directly or generate electricity. A thermal arrangement needs a correctly matched collector, storage cylinder, support frame, pipe routing and temperature/pressure safety provisions. The current cylinder’s condition may determine whether an upgrade or full replacement is sensible.

02

Direct, indirect and circulation arrangements

The appropriate system depends on local climate, water quality, roof exposure and the equipment manufacturer. Some designs circulate water directly through a suitable collector; others use a heat-transfer loop with a heat exchanger and may require pumping and control. Collector elevation, pipe losses, frost exposure and stagnation protection must be considered. A system that heats efficiently at midday can still disappoint if storage, insulation or backup-heating controls are wrong. The layout should be reviewed as a complete hot-water system, not a collection of separate hardware purchases.

03

Safe roof and cylinder integration

A solar collector installation can require roof access, structural consideration, weatherproofing of penetrations and safe pipe supports. At the cylinder we review isolating valves, pressure control, discharge provisions and safe temperature delivery. Thermal systems can produce very hot water, so scald protection and suitable rated components matter. Any electrical controller or backup element is a separate electrical scope. We discuss which qualified trades are needed and whether the chosen equipment carries installation and documentation requirements before promising a commissioning date.

04

Cape Town use, maintenance and quotation

Seasonal sunshine affects solar water heating, so customers should not be promised permanently free hot water. We ask how many people use the property, normal hot-water demand, whether backup heating is already installed and what access exists to the roof and cylinder. The City’s solar information distinguishes solar thermal water heaters from embedded electrical PV systems for authorisation; that does not remove the need for safe plumbing and building compliance. A good handover explains backup settings, maintenance access and which valves or controls the owner should never tamper with.

Common enquiries and what changes the job

Existing electric geyser is sound

An upgrade feasibility check should examine cylinder compatibility, location and required collector size before buying components.

Hot water is cold on cloudy mornings

Storage, backup scheduling and heat losses matter; this is not automatically a defective collector.

Collector pipework leaks at roof level

Roof access, weather seals and high-temperature pipe components require careful inspection and a safe work plan.

Before booking

Information that helps define the work

Provide photos of the geyser rating plate, roof pitch and available collector area from ground level, plus household occupancy and hot-water patterns.

Say whether you want a new complete system, conversion of an existing cylinder, or troubleshooting of a system already installed.

Local requirements to consider

For water installations subject to the City inspection process, the owner or registered plumber must notify the City two working days before the planned inspection of a new or altered solar water heating system. City of Cape Town water installation approval ↗

Frequently asked questions

Solar Geyser & Thermal Water Heater Installation: customer questions

Does a solar geyser need a PV inverter?

No. Solar thermal water heating and photovoltaic electricity generation use different hardware and should be quoted separately.

Will it work when the sun is not shining?

Stored heat and any correctly installed backup source affect availability; performance depends on the design and usage.

Does the City require PV authorisation for a solar water heater?

The City lists solar thermal water heaters separately from PV systems, but building, plumbing and electrical requirements still apply.
