How we approach heat pump water heater installation & assessment

01

What a water-heating heat pump actually does

A heat-pump water heater transfers heat from surrounding air into domestic water. It is not the same device as an air conditioner installed for room comfort, and it does not directly produce electricity. The equipment can be efficient under suitable conditions, but results depend on water use, ambient temperatures, system sizing and controls. We ask whether the project serves a family home, guesthouse, small commercial premises or an existing storage cylinder. Those different use patterns determine whether an air-source system makes practical sense.

02

Cylinder, circulation and pipework compatibility

Before choosing a unit, the storage cylinder, heat exchanger arrangement, required temperatures and pipe positions need review. A heat pump that must recover a large volume of hot water rapidly may require different capacity than one serving steady daily demand. Circulation pumps and valves must suit the flow and pressure needed by the manufacturer. Poorly insulated hot-water loops can erode energy savings. We also check the existing electrical circuit, isolator and protective devices rather than treating a new appliance as a simple plumbing fitting.

03

Outdoor placement, sound and service access

An air-source unit needs clear airflow and space to discharge cooler air and condensate safely. Enclosing it tightly in a small utility cupboard can reduce performance and make servicing difficult. Noise, drainage, location relative to bedrooms and nearby neighbours, and corrosion exposure on the coast all affect placement. We discuss routes for pipes and power, access for future maintenance and how the installation fits within a complex’s approval rules. Any refrigerant-circuit work must be handled by appropriately qualified personnel; the plumbing quotation should not imply unrelated refrigeration capabilities.

04

Running costs, backups and installation handover

Heat pumps are not universally cheapest or best. The customer should compare purchase cost, suitable cylinder replacement, seasonal operating efficiency, maintenance and available electrical tariffs. Existing backup elements and control settings may remain relevant for higher-temperature cycles or unusual demand. We will not promise a fixed percentage saving without a usage profile. For Cape Town properties, a sensible assessment records daily hot-water demand, outdoor unit position, existing geyser specifications and separate trade obligations. Handover should explain controls, isolation and who to contact for faults.

Recognise the situation

Common enquiries and what changes the job

Large family uses most hot water at once

We consider storage capacity and recovery time before focusing on equipment efficiency ratings.

Outdoor unit is next to a bedroom

Noise, airflow and condensate need evaluation before setting the unit on a convenient slab.

Existing geyser and pipework need reuse

Compatibility cannot be assumed from cylinder size alone; connections and controls may dictate replacement.

Before booking

Information that helps define the work

Send a photo of the existing hot-water cylinder label, supply details and possible outdoor unit location, plus expected number of users.

Clarify whether you need a new system, a performance assessment or repair of its existing plumbing connections. Specialist refrigerant service is separately scoped.

Frequently asked questions

Heat Pump Water Heater Installation & Assessment: customer questions

Does a heat pump replace all electricity use for water heating?

No. It uses electricity to transfer heat and may also use auxiliary heating, depending on the design and operating conditions.

Can it be installed inside a small closed cupboard?

Only if the specific system provides the necessary airflow and manufacturer requirements; many air-source units need appropriate open-air ventilation.

Can the old geyser always be retained?

Not always. The cylinder, heat-exchange arrangement, controls and safety provisions must be checked for compatibility.
