Service assessment and practical solutions

01

Read the circulation symptoms correctly

A pool pump drawing air, struggling to prime or losing suction may point to a restriction or air entering the suction side. Water escaping from a return-line joint can behave differently when the pump runs and when it stops. Neither symptom proves the pool shell is sound or defective. We ask for observations of the water level, whether bubbles appear at the return jets, and whether the filter valve or pipework was changed recently. Those clues support a sensible inspection sequence.

02

Distinguish exposed equipment fittings from buried pipe

Connections near the pump, filter, chlorinator or heater are relatively accessible compared with buried lines beneath paving. Weathered unions, cracked PVC elbows and incorrectly supported equipment can cause visible drips. Underground repair demands a different allowance for tracing, lifting surfaces and restoring the site. A repair quote should identify the suspected line and make clear whether pressure testing or other specialist detection is included. We do not promise leak location without inspection or appropriate equipment.

03

Protect the filtration system and surfaces

Pipe diameter, pump characteristics, valve direction and filter arrangement influence circulation performance. Using an unsuitable fitting or routing pipe with sharp unnecessary bends can restrict flow or stress joints. The condition of nearby coping, paving or irrigation must be considered before opening a trench. On older pools, replacing one visibly broken joint is not necessarily a remedy for brittle pipe along the full run. We discuss a targeted repair versus a longer section replacement based on what the accessible pipe shows.

04

Test before covering the repair

An exposed joint should be allowed the appropriate preparation and curing conditions for the selected joining system. Circulation testing and visual checks are useful, while isolated line-pressure testing may be necessary for hidden leaks. The repair and the reinstatement of paving, garden beds or equipment surrounds should be separately identified. If testing suggests a shell or skimmer body fault, that must be distinguished from pipework so the customer can choose the right specialist remedy.

Recognise the situation

Common enquiries and what changes the job

Air bubbles appear at the returns

A suction-side air leak is possible, but the pump lid and water level also deserve attention.

Pool loses water faster while filtering

Pressure-side pipework may warrant testing alongside other potential leak points.

Paving stays damp beside the equipment area

Accessible couplings should be inspected before assuming a full underground replacement.

Before booking

Information that helps define the work

Send photographs of the pump and filter area, note when water is lost and whether the pool was recently resurfaced. Do not open pressurised filter equipment.

Tell us which paving or landscaping crosses suspected underground lines and whether an installer’s pipe plan is available.

Frequently asked questions

Swimming Pool Plumbing & Pipework Repairs: customer questions

Can you tell a pool pipe leak from a shell leak?

Observations help, but targeted testing may be needed to locate the source before repair.

Will paving always have to be broken?

No. Accessible pipework may be repairable without excavation; buried failures can require selective opening.

Does a leaking pool pump mean the pipe is cracked?

Not necessarily. Lid seals, unions and equipment fittings can also leak or admit air.
