Solar & Backup Power / Cape Town

An inverter error code can describe a symptom without identifying the failed part.

Assessment of inverter error indications, failed backup, unexpected tripping and solar charging problems.

01

What the error message can and cannot tell you

An inverter may report an input voltage issue, overload, battery communication alarm or protection event. Similar warnings can arise from different underlying causes, so the equipment manual and installation records matter.

We ask whether the fault appeared after a storm, electrical work, firmware change or new connected load. Photographs of the displayed code and model label can help us prepare, but they do not replace safe on-site testing.

02

Power input, battery and circuit issues

A unit that will not change to backup power may be limited by battery settings, available stored energy, an unsuitable load or the changeover arrangement. A system that trips on return of grid supply may indicate a different circuit or protective problem.

We separate the AC supply, PV input, storage and backed-up circuits in the diagnosis. A replacement inverter is an expensive and sometimes unnecessary response to a loose connection, misconfiguration or defective external protective component.

03

Compatibility matters when replacing equipment

If an inverter is beyond economical repair, a compatible replacement must be selected against the existing PV strings, battery system, protective equipment, grid requirements and intended loads. Physical fit and brand reputation are only part of that decision.

Under Cape Town rules, a system alteration may need updates to the authorised installation details and professional sign-off. We avoid promising to swap a device and switch it on without checking that obligation.

04

Safe reporting and maintenance

Never bridge an inverter’s protection, bypass the battery disconnect or open live DC equipment to clear an alarm. PV and batteries can retain hazardous energy when mains electricity is absent.

When booking, send the make and model, error code, a description of what still works and any system documents available. We can then discuss the appropriate inspection scope and whether manufacturer service or replacement parts may be needed.

Scope & quotation

What determines the work required?

City of Cape Town guidance: Requirements differ depending on the electricity supplier and system design. Review the official SSEG authorisation process before commissioning applicable new PV or battery work.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about solar inverter fault diagnosis

Can you clear an inverter error by restarting the system?

Some alarms are temporary, but repeated or safety-related errors need assessment; owners should follow manufacturer instructions and avoid unsafe resets.

Why does my battery show full but the power still goes off?

Configuration, battery communication, protection settings or overloaded backup circuits may prevent discharge.

Does a replacement inverter need City approval?

Changes to an authorised SSEG design can require review or approval. We check the property’s supply jurisdiction and current rules.
