Solar & Backup Power / Cape Town

Adding storage can improve backup duration, but it does not automatically increase solar generation.

Solar battery capacity planning, compatible storage expansion and electrical integration for existing systems.

01

Determine what the additional battery must achieve

A household wanting longer evening backup has a different requirement from one trying to use more daytime solar generation overnight. Runtime depends on usable battery capacity, load, system losses and the inverter’s limitations.

We work through the essential loads rather than promise a number of hours from a battery label alone. Refrigerators, lighting, computers and occasional pump operation have different power profiles from electric heaters, ovens and geysers.

02

Existing batteries cannot always be mixed

Battery type, voltage, age, chemistry, management electronics and manufacturer instructions determine whether an expansion is supported. Mixing unmatched packs can lead to poor balancing, communication faults or unsafe operation.

We identify the existing battery model and inverter compatibility before discussing an additional pack. In some cases, replacement of a bank or changes to the management arrangement are preferable to attaching another unit.

03

Space, thermal management and protection

Battery installation needs appropriate support, access, ventilation or cooling as specified, safe cable routing, isolation and protective devices. Equipment should not be squeezed into a cupboard simply because it is out of sight.

The existing inverter, charge limits and electrical protection must also be considered. A larger battery bank will not make an undersized inverter able to run an excessive load.

04

Authorised changes and commissioning

Cape Town treats applicable new battery and PV installations as part of its embedded generation framework. Changes to an existing system may affect documentation and approval conditions even if no new roof panels are added.

Before commissioning, relevant tests, settings and communication between inverter and storage must be reviewed by competent personnel. We clarify what is included in the quoted upgrade and what requires separate authority or manufacturer approval.

Scope & quotation

What determines the work required?

City of Cape Town guidance: Requirements differ depending on the electricity supplier and system design. Review the official SSEG authorisation process before commissioning applicable new PV or battery work.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about solar battery upgrades & storage expansion

Will another battery double my backup time?

Only under comparable usable capacity and loads; actual runtime depends on system configuration and consumption.

Can I combine batteries from different brands?

Do not assume so. Only combinations supported by the manufacturers and system design should be considered.

Can I expand storage without installing more panels?

Often, subject to inverter compatibility and system design, but charging time and approval requirements still matter.
