Service assessment and practical solutions

01

Start with battery chemistry and model instructions

Lead-acid and lithium battery installations have different hazard considerations, and products within the same chemistry can have different installation conditions. The manufacturer may specify mounting position, clearances, environmental temperature and communication requirements. We ask for exact model identification, battery quantity and the enclosure size rather than assuming an attractive metal cupboard is safe. A site assessment must also identify nearby hot pipes, water leaks, combustible storage and the path occupants use to move through the room.

02

Consider heat, moisture and maintenance space

A hot garage, poorly ventilated cupboard or damp external wall can shorten equipment life or create unsafe conditions. Some battery systems provide internal management and protection yet still require unobstructed airflow or environmental controls. Cable terminals and isolation devices must remain accessible to authorised technicians. We do not propose cutting ventilation openings into fire-rated structures without proper design. Where a system is located within a shared building, the owner or body corporate may also require approval for equipment positions and access arrangements.

03

Check the interface to inverter and protection

Storage safety involves more than airflow. DC cable sizing, mechanical protection, overcurrent devices, isolation and battery-management communication are central to safe operation. A battery that displays a normal charge percentage is not proof that the installation is correctly protected. We examine the existing drawings and whether any manufacturer-required system configuration has changed. Electrical connection alterations are reserved for qualified personnel following the equipment instructions and the site’s approved design.

04

Record findings before making changes

A useful assessment identifies whether the enclosure and surrounding environment meet the relevant model instructions, and what should be corrected before storage is expanded. We distinguish visual observations from measurements or tests that require specialist equipment. Where applicable, a PV or battery alteration in the City electricity supply area follows the current authorisation and sign-off process. Customers should not move, open or disconnect battery modules to make room themselves. Any repair recommendation should include responsible parties and safe access arrangements.

Common enquiries and what changes the job

Lithium battery installed in a crowded storeroom

Clearances and nearby combustibles should be reviewed against manufacturer guidance.

Existing cabinet feels unusually hot

Temperature logs, ventilation and charging loads need evaluation before adding another unit.

Landlord proposes more batteries in a shared garage

Access, fire-safety responsibilities and approval conditions must be established first.

Before booking

Information that helps define the work

Send the make and model, mounting photographs taken from a safe distance and any existing installation diagrams. Do not open battery enclosures.

Tell us whether the batteries are in a bedroom, garage, outside cabinet or shared area and whether new capacity is planned.

Quotation scope

What affects the cost and work programme?

Where applicable in the City of Cape Town electricity supply area, new solar PV/battery systems and relevant system changes must follow the City authorisation process. Professional sign-off and suitable approved inverters are important requirements; never activate an unauthorised modified system.

Frequently asked questions

Solar Battery Enclosure, Ventilation & Safety Assessment: customer questions

Can lithium batteries be installed in any cupboard?

No. Follow product instructions and assess heat, clearances, surrounding materials and safe access.

Does a fan make a hot battery cabinet safe?

Not necessarily. The full enclosure and electrical design must meet the equipment requirements.

Can I move my battery to another wall?

Relocation may change electrical routing and approval; qualified assessment is recommended.
