How we approach solar battery health & capacity assessment

01

Short backup runtime does not always mean a bad battery

An owner may experience much shorter backup than when a system was installed, but the cause could be additional household loads, changed depth-of-discharge settings, unusual temperature or an ageing battery. A battery that will not charge at all is a different fault path. We ask when the runtime changed, what circuits are supported and how full the battery appears before and after a power interruption. The goal is to separate measurable battery degradation from usage and software settings rather than recommend replacement based on a phone-screen percentage alone.

02

State of charge, state of health and usable capacity

Battery systems may report state of charge, battery-management alarms, cycle counts and a vendor-specific state-of-health estimate. These are helpful indicators but not a universal laboratory capacity measurement. Usable energy depends on voltage range, manufacturer reserve settings, inverter efficiency and load profile. We review accessible monitoring data, compatible battery-management information and the product specification. Any controlled load or capacity assessment must follow approved methods and be performed by personnel familiar with the chemistry and protective equipment; deliberate deep discharging can damage a battery.

03

Temperature, connections and battery configuration

A lithium installation can behave poorly when battery modules have unequal histories, firmware mismatch, poor ventilation or communication faults between inverter and battery controller. Loose or overheated high-current joints pose serious risks. We do not recommend touching terminals, opening battery cases or bypassing BMS protection. Instead, the site review records error codes, battery arrangement, ventilation, temperature exposure and warranty documentation. Sometimes the result is a settings or firmware discussion with the manufacturer; sometimes it justifies a properly specified upgrade.

04

Practical reports and replacement decisions

A sound recommendation distinguishes current performance, manufacturer limits, observable faults and the uncertainties that remain. For Cape Town owners planning more battery storage, the existing inverter compatibility and the approved PV/battery configuration also matter. The City’s authorisation rules apply to relevant new systems and modifications within its supply area; capacity upgrades cannot simply be energised outside the approved process. We quote testing and corrective work separately from optional additional storage, and we do not promise a fixed number of future battery cycles or years without manufacturer-specific evidence.

Recognise the situation

Common enquiries and what changes the job

Backup time fell after an appliance was added

First review actual essential loads and discharge history; the battery could still be operating normally.

Two battery modules report different status

Communication and module balance need manufacturer-compatible assessment, not random terminal swaps.

Battery feels hot or smells unusual

Stop using affected equipment and seek qualified assessment; signs of overheating are not routine optimisation issues.

Before booking

Information that helps define the work

Send brand and model labels from outside the enclosure, monitoring screenshots, alarm history and the loads that remain powered during an outage.

Provide the installation date, warranty details and any recent battery, inverter or firmware changes. Do not open battery packs to gather photos.

Quotation scope

What affects the cost and work programme?

Where applicable in the City of Cape Town electricity supply area, new solar PV/battery systems and relevant system changes must follow the City authorisation process. Professional sign-off and suitable approved inverters are important requirements; never activate an unauthorised modified system.

Runtime estimates depend on usable storage

Battery runtime cannot be derived from the inverter size alone. Use realistic load patterns, usable storage, discharge limits, conversion losses and any loads that cycle on and off. Battery age and temperature may also affect performance. We encourage a documented runtime assumption and correct system testing rather than promising a fixed number of hours from the battery label.

Frequently asked questions

Solar Battery Health & Capacity Assessment: customer questions

Can a battery show 100% but provide short backup?

Yes. Indicated charge and genuinely usable capacity are different measurements; settings, battery condition and load can all matter.

Does health testing require opening the battery?

Not necessarily. Many initial checks use safe monitoring data and external system measurements; intrusive testing is equipment-specific.

Should I replace the inverter at the same time?

Only if compatibility, condition or system-design requirements justify it. Battery performance alone does not prove inverter failure.
