Solar System Inspection & Performance Checks Cape Town

When a solar installation stops performing as expected, the first step is to understand the actual system, its authorised configuration and the symptom. We assess before proposing extra panels or replacement equipment.

Solar & Backup Power / Cape Town

When a solar installation stops performing as expected, the first step is to understand the actual system, its authorised configuration and the symptom.

Solar PV and backup-power system assessments covering output concerns, safety, visible condition and equipment behaviour.

01

A lower energy yield is not always a failed panel

Seasonal sun position, shading, soiling, inverter settings and changing household demand all affect how much electricity appears available. A comparison should use realistic conditions and available monitoring records, not a single daily figure.

We ask for the installed system details, recent output trends and any changes to roof shading or electrical loads. A sudden drop on one input may warrant different checks from an overall seasonal reduction in output.

02

Visual checks and electrical checks have different limits

Visible cable damage, loose-looking supports or deteriorated roof penetrations may be identified during a site walk-through, but a visual check is not a substitute for electrical testing. PV strings and inverters carry hazardous energy even when a normal supply is interrupted.

Where testing is justified, qualified personnel assess the relevant part of the installation using appropriate procedures. Owners should not disconnect PV connectors, open inverter enclosures or attempt to wash damaged equipment.

03

Backup behaviour deserves a separate assessment

A system can generate solar electricity correctly but still provide poor backup because essential circuits were selected poorly, battery settings are unsuitable or appliances draw more power than expected. We separate generation, storage and changeover symptoms.

Inverter logs, battery state-of-charge patterns and actual connected loads can help identify the issue. The quotation should state whether the work is a performance assessment, a repair, a setting review or an authorised system modification.

04

Cape Town authorisation and documentation

In the City of Cape Town electricity supply area, applicable PV and battery installations require authorisation, approved equipment and professional sign-off under the City’s published process. Existing documentation can help establish what was installed and what changes are permitted.

We discuss whether the property is supplied by the City or Eskom and whether the proposed work changes the registered configuration. Where formal design, sign-off or application work is required, that forms part of a properly scoped specialist project—not a casual settings adjustment.

Scope & quotation

What determines the work required?

City of Cape Town guidance: Requirements differ depending on the electricity supplier and system design. Review the official SSEG authorisation process before commissioning applicable new PV or battery work.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about solar system inspection & performance checks

Why is my solar system producing less in winter?

Winter sun angle and shorter daylight hours can reduce output. A comparison should also account for weather, shading and system history.

Can an inspection tell me whether I need more batteries?

It can inform an assessment of load, backup duration and existing system capacity; battery selection requires detailed compatibility checks.

Do I need approval to change an authorised PV system?

Alterations may affect the approved design and require engagement with the relevant supply authority. The City’s current rules should be checked.
