AC-Coupled Solar & Battery Integration Assessment Cape Town

Adding batteries to an existing PV installation is not always a straightforward inverter swap. We review whether AC coupling is technically appropriate for the existing equipment and supply arrangement.

AC-Coupled Solar & Battery Integration Assessment: how we approach the work

01

Establish what is already installed

Some properties have a grid-tied PV inverter and later want battery backup; others already have a hybrid system with limited storage. We identify inverter models, installed PV capacity, existing single- or three-phase supply, protection arrangements and the approved system configuration. Not every inverter supports AC coupling, and manufacturer compatibility is essential. The customer’s goal also matters: storing excess PV generation, maintaining essentials during outages or reducing imports lead to different designs.

02

Understand why AC coupling needs careful controls

With AC coupling, a battery inverter may coordinate with an existing PV inverter through compatible control and protection arrangements. When islanded from the grid, PV generation must be controlled so it does not overcharge batteries or destabilise the local supply. Transfer switching, frequency behaviour and export limiting therefore matter. We do not claim that any two brand names will operate together. The design needs to follow approved manufacturer configurations and the relevant electrical standards.

03

Compare options before choosing hardware

Sometimes a compatible battery or inverter expansion is sensible; elsewhere replacing an older grid-tied inverter with a suitable approved hybrid system may be more maintainable. We examine board space, protected-load circuits, cable routes, battery location, ventilation and equipment age. Customers should compare the price of the whole compliant installation, including protection and commissioning, rather than the purchase cost of the inverter alone.

04

Account for SSEG authorisation and safe commissioning

Cape Town treats new PV and battery installations as subject to the applicable embedded generation process. We check the existing approval status and whether the proposed modification requires updated drawings, professional sign-off or amended documentation before energising. Commissioning must include the intended grid and backup behaviour, not only whether the lights turn on. We explain which design decisions require the registered electrical team or engineering professional.

Situations worth discussing

What the symptoms may mean

Existing solar generates by day but provides no backup

Assess approved battery options rather than assuming storage can be plugged in.

A homeowner wants to keep a functioning older PV inverter

Compare AC coupling compatibility against a hybrid replacement.

A business wants to add storage on three-phase supply

Review phase allocation, critical loads and approval requirements.

Planning & quotation

What affects the work and the quotation?

We agree on the inspection or installation scope before substantial changes proceed. Site conditions and product compatibility matter more than an unverified fixed price.

Frequently asked questions

AC-Coupled Solar & Battery Integration Assessment: frequently asked questions

Will an AC-coupled battery work with any PV inverter?

No. Compatibility and safe control behaviour must be confirmed.

Does battery storage always give uninterrupted power?

No. Changeover time, supported circuits and equipment design determine the experience.

Can a previously approved PV installation be modified freely?

Not necessarily. Changes may need approval updates and compliant sign-off.
