Solar PV String Mismatch & Output Testing Cape Town

When one PV string produces less power than expected, the cause may be shading, module variation, connection faults or inverter tracking conditions. We plan measured diagnostics instead of replacing panels based on a low-output screenshot.

Site assessment and work planning

01

Interpret the data before climbing onto a roof

Inverter portals may report string power, voltage or current, but their meaning depends on the MPPT arrangement and equipment model. A lower number does not automatically confirm a faulty panel: the strings may face different directions, carry different module counts or receive unequal sun. We compare design documentation with fault history, time-of-day data and any recent additions. Where no baseline exists, expectations need to be calculated carefully and qualified as estimates.

02

Check matching, shading and configuration

Panels sharing a string usually need compatible electrical characteristics and an installation layout that suits inverter limits. Partial shade on a single module can affect string behaviour, but optimisers and bypass diodes complicate simple assumptions. We review whether the strings were originally balanced and whether later roof additions, antennae or foliage altered the solar exposure. Electrical changes should be designed and documented, not made by moving connectors around until the readings look better.

03

Use safe testing methods on the DC side

PV arrays generate voltage in sunlight even when the inverter is turned off. Testing requires suitable instruments, isolation procedures and appropriately trained personnel. Visual inspection may reveal damaged cable supports, loose connectors or heat discolouration, but DC measurements should be interpreted within equipment ratings and environmental conditions. Mixing connector types or opening live connections is hazardous; homeowners should not attempt to separate rooftop plugs as a troubleshooting step.

04

Explain the recommended outcome and limits

The fault may be a damaged module, MPPT configuration issue, shade pattern or data-reporting discrepancy. We distinguish repairs from performance upgrades and advise whether the manufacturer needs to be involved to protect warranties. After any approved corrective work, current and voltage readings should be assessed under recorded light conditions. Alterations that change an authorised PV system must be evaluated against the applicable municipal approval and sign-off requirements.

For applicable municipal requirements, consult the City of Cape Town guidance alongside the project assessment.

Typical enquiries

When this work may be needed

01

Two nominally identical strings show markedly different currents around midday.

02

A newly added array performs poorly after being combined with older modules.

03

Morning shade produces unexpected output drops in one roof section.

Before your appointment

Information that helps us prepare

Send screenshots of string-level data, inverter model, array layout and known panel specifications.

Explain whether the problem appeared after roof work, inverter replacement or a new shading obstruction.

Quotation scope

What affects the cost and work programme?

Where applicable in the City of Cape Town electricity supply area, new solar PV/battery systems and relevant system changes must follow the City authorisation process. Professional sign-off and suitable approved inverters are important requirements; never activate an unauthorised modified system.

For applicable local requirements, see the City of Cape Town: embedded generation authorisation and metering. We confirm the current conditions before proposing work.

Frequently asked questions

Solar PV String Mismatch & Output Testing: frequently asked questions

Does low output mean every panel on the string is bad?

No. Shade, a single fault, wiring configuration and inverter limits can all reduce reported power.

Can strings with different panel counts be joined?

That depends on design, equipment and allowable electrical characteristics. It requires a qualified system assessment.

Can testing happen on a cloudy day?

Some inspection work can, but meaningful performance comparisons may need appropriate irradiance conditions or additional instruments.
