How we approach solar shading & panel optimisation assessment

01

Identify the actual loss before buying more equipment

A solar array can underperform because of shade, dirt, panel orientation, temperature, inverter clipping or a faulty string. An optimiser is not the automatic answer to every poor production graph. We ask for the panel layout, inverter model and monitoring history, particularly production patterns on clear days. Morning tree shade behaves differently from a chimney shadow moving over a panel at midday. Where a system is newly installed, expected output should be evaluated against its actual configuration and weather instead of a generic kilowatt-hour promise.

02

Shade geometry and string configuration

Modules connected in a string influence one another, but the effect depends on bypass diodes, inverter MPPT arrangements, panel characteristics and the timing of shade. Shade on a north-facing array from a neighbouring building may be hard to eliminate, whereas overhanging branches may present a different management choice. A review considers module grouping and whether the existing inverter can support alternative string arrangements. Changes to connections and DC equipment require qualified personnel and appropriate isolation; do not move panels or plug components together while the system is energised.

03

When module-level electronics may be appropriate

Power optimisers or microinverters can be useful in some mixed-orientation or partially shaded designs, but compatibility, fault visibility, roof access and long-term maintenance all affect the decision. Installing a component not approved by the inverter or module manufacturer can create new problems. Extra electronics also add connections and failure points. We look for a clear technical reason before proposing an upgrade, such as demonstrable mismatch or a layout that cannot be changed. A simple relocation of obstructions, careful panel cleaning or correcting a disconnected string may offer a better first step.

04

Cape Town compliance and handover

A system alteration that changes PV equipment or electrical configuration should be reviewed against the authorised SSEG design, utility requirements and relevant sign-off. The City of Cape Town’s current application rules for applicable PV/battery installations require approved inverter equipment, professional sign-off and authorisation before energisation. We discuss who will update technical drawings, test the changed array and maintain warranty records. Useful owner documentation includes a before-and-after production comparison under comparable conditions, not a sales claim that every added optimiser guarantees a particular yield.

Recognise the situation

Common enquiries and what changes the job

Tree shadows one row in winter

Shade changes with season and solar elevation; a single midday photograph will not describe the annual pattern.

East and west roof planes share one tracker

The inverter’s MPPT capability and original wiring may constrain how modules can be grouped.

Production drops suddenly on a clear day

A sudden step-change suggests checking faults and disconnections before redesigning shading mitigation.

Before booking

Information that helps define the work

Share monitoring screenshots with dates, the inverter model, photos of the roof from safe ground-level positions and any original string diagram.

Tell us if the installation is authorised and whether modifications have been made since approval; do not open or disconnect DC connectors yourself.

Quotation scope

What affects the cost and work programme?

Where applicable in the City of Cape Town electricity supply area, new solar PV/battery systems and relevant system changes must follow the City authorisation process. Professional sign-off and suitable approved inverters are important requirements; never activate an unauthorised modified system.

Frequently asked questions

Solar Shading & Panel Optimisation Assessment: customer questions

Do optimisers completely remove losses from shade?

No. They may reduce mismatch losses in suitable configurations but cannot create sunlight where a module is shaded.

Can I add optimisers to any panel brand?

Compatibility and approved installation methods matter; the existing design must be checked before equipment is ordered.

Will you change the SSEG paperwork?

Any required design and approval updates must be scoped with appropriately qualified personnel before modifications are activated.
