Solar PV Export-Limiting Controls & Verification Cape Town

A system configured not to feed power into the grid still needs correct design, measurement and approval. We assess export-limiting equipment and verification requirements for Cape Town properties.

Solar PV Export-Limiting Controls & Verification: how we approach the work

01

Understand the approved export arrangement

A non-export PV installation is not the same as a system exempt from City authorisation. We ask which supply authority serves the property, whether the system is approved to export and whether the metering arrangement matches the planned operating mode. Where the owner wants to sell surplus energy, different technical and account arrangements may apply. A change in export settings should never be made simply to work around registration requirements.

02

Locate the meter or sensor in the correct electrical path

Export limiting often depends on an energy meter or current transformers measuring consumption at a defined point. Incorrect direction, position, phase mapping or communication can make the inverter see the wrong flow. We compare the equipment configuration with the approved electrical diagram and the real board layout. This matters particularly where there are sub-distribution boards, a generator or more than one inverter; a single sensor cannot be assumed to describe every circuit automatically.

03

Check the control response without unsafe experiments

A suitable commissioning review examines the expected relationship between generation, consumption and power measured at the boundary. We look for reporting inconsistencies and manufacturer alarms while respecting electrical safety controls. It is not appropriate to ask the owner to reverse a CT or change live meter wiring. When sensors or firmware are incompatible, replacing or reconfiguring hardware may require an amended design and qualified installation.

04

Keep a record of compliance and changes

Cape Town authorisation normally requires approved equipment, appropriate professional involvement and documentation before activation. Any changes to capacity or configuration should be assessed for amended approval. We explain the difference between a technical zero-export control and a formal municipal authorisation. The customer should retain relevant diagrams, commissioning records and the current inverter settings for future inspection or property transfer.

Situations worth discussing

What the symptoms may mean

An owner sees export arrows despite a no-export setting

Review meter direction and control evidence before changing settings.

A new inverter was added to an older PV array

Check whether existing measurements and approval cover the change.

A business uses multiple sub-boards

Define the measurement point and phase arrangement carefully.

Planning & quotation

What affects the work and the quotation?

We agree on the inspection or installation scope before substantial changes proceed. Site conditions and product compatibility matter more than an unverified fixed price.

Frequently asked questions

Solar PV Export-Limiting Controls & Verification: frequently asked questions

Does setting zero export remove SSEG registration requirements?

No. Applicable City authorisation still applies.

Can a backwards CT make export readings wrong?

Yes. Position, orientation and phase mapping can affect measurement.

Does this service include selling electricity to the City?

A feed-in arrangement has additional technical and account steps and needs its own assessment.
