EV Charger Load Management & Circuit Assessment Cape Town

Installing or upgrading a home EV charger requires more than finding wall space. We assess the available supply, existing household loads and charge scheduling options before deciding what charger size the property can support.

Site assessment and work planning

01

Determine the electrical capacity available

A property with an electric geyser, stove, heat pump and pool equipment may already approach its supply limit during busy periods. We review the main supply rating, actual circuit layout and significant simultaneous loads, rather than assuming the car charger can take the remaining nameplate capacity. A single-phase home and a three-phase business have different design choices. The vehicle’s onboard charging limits and the charger type also affect the maximum useful charge rate.

02

Understand fixed charging and dynamic control

Some chargers limit current to a constant setting; others can adjust charging based on measured property demand. Dynamic load management may rely on a compatible energy meter or current transformer installed in the correct location. We assess whether the intended device communicates reliably and what it should do if the measurement signal fails. Scheduling charging overnight may reduce concurrent demand but is not a substitute for correctly sized conductors and protective equipment.

03

Plan cable route, protection and outdoor placement

A garage wall near a vehicle is convenient only if there is safe cable access, ventilation as needed and an appropriate mounting surface. Outdoor installations also require protection from rain and vehicle impact. We assess cable length, voltage drop, routing and the protection required under the charger and electrical installation standards. Existing solar or inverter equipment may influence energy-management choices, but the charging circuit must remain appropriately designed for its actual operating load.

04

Test user settings and provide a clear handover

A charging installation should be verified before normal use, with applicable certification by authorised personnel. The owner needs to understand maximum charge settings, any schedule that may stop charging unexpectedly and how to disconnect safely. We distinguish app-based convenience features from electrical safety functions. If the installation is intended to use surplus PV generation, we confirm that the charger and measurement hardware can actually support that mode rather than promise it from an ordinary timer.

Typical enquiries

When this work may be needed

01

A homeowner wants a faster charger but is unsure whether the supply can support it.

02

A household main breaker trips when the car, geyser and oven operate together.

03

An existing charger should prioritise available solar power without exceeding the home limit.

Frequently asked questions

EV Charger Load Management & Circuit Assessment: frequently asked questions

Will a bigger wallbox always charge the car faster?

No. The car onboard charger, available electrical supply and configured current limit may all constrain the charging speed.

Can solar panels supply an EV charger?

Potentially, with compatible charging control and a compliant installation. PV output varies, so grid or battery interaction must be planned.

Can load management replace electrical protection?

No. Dynamic controls supplement, rather than replace, correctly designed conductors and protective devices.
