What the work involves and how we assess it

01

Check the electrical supply before selecting a charger

A home wallbox cannot be chosen solely by the vehicle’s maximum advertised charging rate. The property supply capacity, phases, existing household demand and distribution board arrangement determine what charging power is reasonable. We ask for the charger model, vehicle information, parking location and site supply details. For some properties a smaller smart-managed charging load is more suitable than an expensive supply upgrade.

02

Dedicated circuits and protective arrangements

Fixed EV charging equipment needs suitable wiring, isolation, protection, earthing and installation to the relevant electrical requirements and manufacturer instructions. Cable length and routes through walls, ceilings or outside conduits affect the scope. We review weather exposure and mechanical protection where a charging cable crosses a garage or driveway. The final protective arrangement must suit the particular charging equipment, not a generic breaker chosen from internet advice.

03

Garages, parking bays and sectional-title properties

An owner in a free-standing house controls more of the installation space than someone whose parking bay or cable route crosses common property. Complexes may require written permissions, load-allocation decisions and metering arrangements. We ask who owns the board, parking area and walls along the proposed route. We do not promise body corporate approval or the capacity to charge several vehicles without assessing the shared installation.

04

Commissioning and daily-use expectations

A complete job should include safe electrical testing, explanation of isolating the charger and any equipment commissioning required by the manufacturer. The achievable charging rate can differ from the wallbox nameplate because of supply settings, vehicle limits and load management. Clients should also consider whether planned solar generation changes the charging schedule rather than assuming every charger automatically uses excess solar.

Situations to discuss

Common job conditions that change the approach

Describe what you have observed before requesting work. These examples are not substitutes for an on-site diagnosis.

7 kW wallbox on a smaller household supply

Measure the existing demand and determine an appropriate installation approach before promising full-rate charging.

Sectional-title bay far from the main DB

Obtain building approvals and plan a secure cable route and metering responsibility first.

Owner wants solar-responsive charging

Confirm compatibility between the EV charger, inverter and monitoring system before specifying equipment.

Preparing the request

What to have ready before arranging an assessment

The quickest useful first enquiry includes the vehicle model, preferred charger type, parking position and an approximate route to the distribution board. Where a homeowner expects the car to charge overnight, ask what other high-load equipment typically operates at the same time. This helps the electrician assess whether dynamic load control or a revised circuit plan is necessary.

In a complex, the parking bay may be exclusive-use while the wall, conduit route or electrical supply is common property. The owner should discuss permission and metering with the managing agent before ordering equipment. A technically correct charger is not automatically a permitted installation if ownership and routing agreements have not been settled.

Consider the charging cable when the vehicle is parked in its normal position, including how pedestrians, children and garage doors move around it. A poor mounting position can create daily hazards even when the electrical supply is compliant. Send the approximate parking-bay dimensions and likely point of connection with your enquiry.

Frequently asked questions

Home EV Charger Electrical Installation: questions

Will any EV charger work on my DB board?

No. Supply, protection, cable routes and the charger model must all be checked.

Do you supply the charger itself?

Provide the intended make and model so supply and installation scope can be discussed.

Can I use a domestic socket for daily high-power charging?

Avoid relying on an unsuitable outlet or extension arrangement; request a dedicated installation assessment.
