Three-Phase Load Balancing & Circuit Review Cape Town

A three-phase supply can suffer uneven loading when heavy single-phase equipment is poorly distributed. We assess building loads and recommend practical circuit changes where justified.

Three-Phase Load Balancing & Circuit Review: how we approach the work

01

Review real demand instead of guessing from breaker labels

A building may have a three-phase incoming supply while many individual circuits use only one phase. We first identify significant loads such as air conditioning, electric water heating, kitchen equipment, workshop motors and EV chargers. Nameplate ratings and usage schedules are not always the same as actual simultaneous demand. The distribution board layout, labels and any past alterations inform the review. This is distinct from simply upgrading from single phase to three phase.

02

Check whether imbalance is actually causing the problem

Uneven phase current can affect conductor loading, available capacity and the neutral in some conditions. Symptoms may include repeated trips, overheated components or limited ability to add equipment. These symptoms also occur for other reasons, so an assessment should include appropriate measurements by registered electrical personnel. We do not recommend moving circuits simply to make board rows look symmetrical. The safe capacity of the supply and each conductor remains the first constraint.

03

Plan changes with protection and equipment dependencies

Moving a circuit from one phase to another may affect associated isolators, control circuits, shared neutrals or specific three-phase equipment. Solar systems, standby generators and load-management devices need to be considered before the phase arrangement is changed. We discuss whether the work is minor redistribution, provision of new circuits or a broader board upgrade. Depending on the scope, drawings, tests and compliance documents may need updating.

04

Verify the outcome and plan for future additions

Any approved changes should be followed by appropriate electrical checks and a review of significant operating loads. A well-labelled board and clear schedule can help future contractors avoid recreating the original imbalance. If the supply itself is insufficient for a planned expansion, phase balancing will not create more contracted capacity. We explain when a supply upgrade or engineering review would be a more suitable long-term approach.

Situations worth discussing

What the symptoms may mean

A commercial kitchen trips when several appliances run

Compare actual simultaneous phase demand and circuit protection.

A new EV charger is proposed for a three-phase property

Assess available capacity before choosing a charger size or phase.

A workshop adds a compressor and extraction equipment

Review motor starting, feeder size and distribution along with phase loads.

Planning & quotation

What affects the work and the quotation?

We agree on the inspection or installation scope before substantial changes proceed. Site conditions and product compatibility matter more than an unverified fixed price.

Frequently asked questions

Three-Phase Load Balancing & Circuit Review: frequently asked questions

Does phase balancing increase my municipal supply allowance?

No. It can improve distribution but not enlarge the authorised supply capacity.

Can I move a breaker to another phase myself?

No. This requires competent electrical assessment and work.

Is the same assessment useful for a single-phase home?

A single-phase property needs load assessment, but phase balancing does not apply in the same way.
