Service assessment and practical solutions

01

Why backflow protection is different from an ordinary leak repair

A water supply should travel in the intended direction. When pressure conditions change, however, liquid from irrigation equipment, storage systems or certain commercial connections may be drawn back toward drinking-water pipework. A leaking tap is visible; cross-connection risk may remain unseen until a particular pressure event. We start by identifying what equipment shares the supply, whether there are alternative water sources, and whether an appropriate protection device is already present. A double-check valve, air gap or testable assembly is not chosen interchangeably: the required protection depends on the hazard category and applicable installation requirements.

02

What the assessment should establish

For a private home, we need to know whether rainwater tanks, irrigation dosing equipment or garden connections are linked to the municipal supply. At a business, washdown equipment, process water and shared plumbing may require more careful separation. We inspect accessible connection points, valve positions and the possibility of bypasses. We also establish who manages the incoming connection; some work falls under municipal or building-management control rather than a single occupant. The output should identify the actual risky connection, the appropriate installation location and whether specialist testing is necessary.

03

Device installation, service access and testing

The correct device needs adequate space for isolation, servicing and any required testing. Fitting an expensive assembly into an inaccessible cupboard does not solve future inspection requirements. Where a backflow device is defective, we assess whether repairs or replacement are permitted for its design. We check orientation, pressure ratings and compatibility with the downstream plumbing. If a certificate or formal test is needed, that requirement must be explicitly scoped to an authorised tester and the relevant standard; we will not describe every valve replacement as a certified backflow test.

04

Cape Town water and shared property considerations

Cape Town properties may combine municipal water with storage tanks, boosters and irrigation networks, especially where continuity of water supply matters. That makes identifying the correct boundary between supplies essential. In apartment blocks or managed premises, the body corporate or facilities manager may need to approve isolation or access before work begins. Send photographs of the connection, a description of the connected equipment and the property type when requesting a visit. We can then discuss assessment, safe isolation arrangements and the documented scope without assuming one valve suits every property.

Common enquiries and what changes the job

Irrigation or tank connected to the house

Describe how non-potable or stored water enters the system. We need to distinguish a dedicated irrigation branch from a connection that could feed back toward domestic taps.

Commercial washdown point

Identify chemical dosing, hoses left submerged or industrial water connections. The risk category determines what separation is appropriate.

Valve present but no records

A valve body does not prove correct selection or testing. The installation layout and any historic reports should be reviewed together.

Before booking

Information that helps define the work

What to prepare: photograph the incoming water connection and any labelled valves, and note the equipment attached downstream.

If this is shared property, provide the facilities contact and known isolation windows. Testing or formal sign-off will be stated separately in the quote; it must never be assumed from the initial enquiry.

Frequently asked questions

Backflow Prevention & Water-Supply Protection: customer questions

Does a normal non-return valve always meet the requirement?

No. The protection needed depends on the nature of the connection and the risk of contaminating the potable supply. We first establish what is connected and what requirements apply.

Can a tank and municipal supply be connected?

A dual-source arrangement requires properly designed separation and controls. A casual crossover between supplies can create contamination risks and should be assessed before alterations.

Will you issue a backflow certificate?

Any specific test or certificate must be confirmed against the device, risk and authorised personnel. We will identify that requirement before offering formal certification.
